Louisiana Falls To Georgia Southern In Close Affair, 3-2

4/9/2016 10:07:00 PM | Baseball

STATESBORO, Ga. – The 26th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team came up on the wrong side of a 3-2 decision on Saturday night falling to Georgia Southern to even the series at J.I. Clements Stadium.

The loss marked the second time on the season that the Cajuns (20-11, 9-5 Sun Belt) dropped a decision in game where they outhit their opponent with a 6-5 edge at the plate. Louisiana also saw only its second one-run game slip away this year.

"You hate to waste our pitching, and that's a winnable ballgame for us," head coach Tony Robichaux said." If you aren't going to score runs, you have to play defense. We didn't make a play in the field when we needed to at a critical moment in the game, and we couldn't bring a guy home from third tonight. We needed one of our hitter to man up and do a job. We've got to do a better job of competing at the plate and competing for nine innings. They gave us the first run and we only scored one run through nine innings."

Wyatt Marks (3-3) was the tough luck loser holding the Eagles (18-13, 7-7 Sun Belt) to three runs on five hits in six innings with six strikeouts and one walk. Senior Eric Carter was lights out in relief throwing two perfect innings with five strikeouts.

Chase Cohen (3-2) picked up the victory limiting the Cajuns to two runs (one earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks in six innings. Connor Simmons closed out the contest with three scoreless innings in relief to notch his first save of the season.

Logan Baldwin had a game-high two hits in the contest, while Cal Baker had a pair of RBI.

Brian Mills produced his own run in the top of the first to give the Cajuns a 1-0 lead. Mills singled up the middle to lead off the inning and then moved to third base on a steal and throwing error by catcher C.J. Brazil. Mills then scored on a wild pitch by Cohen to give Louisiana the one-run advantage.

The lead would be short lived though as Ryan Cleveland drove a two-out single up the middle to score Baldwin from second base to tie the contest at 1-all.

Louisiana regained the lead in the top of the second inning as Brad Antchak scored on a Nick Thurman stolen base attempt as Thurman got into a run down to allow Antchak to score easily to give the Ragin' Cajuns a 2-1 edge. Antchak walked with one out and then moved to third on a Thurman single to the right center gap.

The Cajuns had the first of three runners thrown out at the plate in the top of the fifth as Brenn Conrad was caught off of third on a sharp ground ball hit to third base by Kennon Fontenot.

Georgia Southern grabbed its first lead of the series in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run single to left by Baker to make the score 3-2.

In the top of the sixth, the Ragin' Cajuns again fell victim as Joe Robbins was was thrown out at the plate on a Stefan Trosclair safety squeeze attempt.

Louisiana threatened again in the top of the ninth as Trosclair led off the inning with an infield single to shortstop. Trosclair moved to second on an Ishmael Edwards sac bunt and then stole second with one out. In the next at bat, Trosclair was gunned down at the plate on a sharply hit ball to second base by Antchak with the defense playing in. Simmons then got Conrad to line out to center to end the game.

The two teams play the rubber match tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET with freshman right-hander Nick Lee (5-1, 2.70 ERA). Georgia Southern will send freshman right-hander Brian Eichhorn (3-1, 2.19 ERA) out to the mound in the series finale.

The game can be heard live on News Talk 96.5 KPEL-FM with Jay Walker making the call and Jeff Schneider adding color.
