SAN MARCOS, Texas – Abby Johnson recorded a three-set victory at No. 4 singles to help the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team clinch a 4-2 win over Texas State on Friday at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
Senior Melissa Burckhartt and sophomore Elena Sava each picked up victories in both singles and doubles as Louisiana (9-9, 1-3 SBC) claimed the final three singles matches and rallied from a 2-1 deficit.
"The girls stayed tough and fought for every point," Ragin' Cajuns head coach Stephanie Vallejos said. "I'm proud of the intensity we had on the court and I think being pushed to a third set in each singles match shows that we had to play with a lot of heart to win."
Louisiana took care of doubles with a sweep as Burckhartt and sophomore Kelly Drew earned a 6-3 victory over Yadira Rubio and Ana Perez at No. 1. Sava and senior Juliette Clement clinched the doubles point for the Ragin' Cajuns as they would claim a 6-4 win over Katy Collins and Ammaarah Tim.
Texas State (7-11, 2-2 SBC) took a 2-1 lead in the match after claiming wins at both singles victories at No. 1 and No. 5.
However, the match's next three points went to Louisiana. Burckhartt would rally from dropping the first set to earn a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Rubio at No. 3 singles before Sava would claim a three-set victory (6-2, 4-6, 6-1) over Pippa Carr at No. 2 singles.
Johnson, who earned her seventh win of the season in singles play, clinched the win for Louisiana at No. 4 as she posted a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 win over Collins.
Burckhartt improved her singles record to a team-best 8-5 this spring. Clement and Sava moved to 9-4 as a doubles duo while Burckhartt and Drew earned their eighth doubles win of the season.
