Women's Tennis Ends Weekend with Sweep in San Marcos

Senior Juliette Clement clinches victory for Cajuns at No. 5 singles
SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Sophomore Elena Sava and senior Juliette Clement both earned singles and a doubles win as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team finished the weekend with a 4-2 win over Arkansas State at the Bobcat Tennis Complex in San Marcos, Texas on Saturday.
The win improved the Cajuns record to 10-9 this season and 2-3 in Sun Belt Conference play.
"The team played well today and played tough enough to close out the weekend with a win," Ragin' Cajuns head coach Stephanie Vallejos said. "It's great to see us play the way we practice and to watch the team step up for the big points."
The Cajuns and Red Wolves split the first two doubles sets. Melissa Burckhartt and Kelly Drew defeated Julie Gauguery and Victoria Roberts, 6-3 at No. 1, while Victoria Pisani and Sofia Krsmanovic came away with a 7-5 win at No. 2 over UL's Alexandra Way and Abby Johnson.
Clement and Sava closed out doubles with the decisive 7-5 win against Sabina Jeresic and Chiara Stefanov at the No. 3 spot.
The Cajuns took a commanding 3-0 lead in the match via singles wins from Burckhartt (6-2, 6-0 over Stefanov at No. 3) and Sava (6-3, 6-3 over Roberts at No. 2).
Arkansas State came back to win the next two singles matches to make it a 3-2 contest. Jueresic won, 6-4, 6-2 over Johnson at No. 4, while UL's Drew fell to Gaugery in a three-set battle at No. 1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3
At No. 5 singles, Clement clinched the win for Louisiana over Krsmanovic, 6-3, 6-1 to give the Cajuns their first double-digit win season since 2013 when they finished 14-12.
Burckhartt moved to a team-best 9-5 in singles this season with her victory on Saturday. The Clement/Sava doubles duo improved to 10-4 in doubles in 2016, while the doubles team of Burckhartt and Drew moved to 9-3.
The Cajuns close out the regular season next Wednesday, April 13 at home against LSU-Alexandria on Senior Day from Cajun Courts. First serve is at 5 p.m.
