Louisiana Baseball Falls To Louisiana Tech 6-3 In Midweek
4/27/2016 9:24:00 PM | Baseball
LAFAYETTE, La. – The 14th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team couldn't overcome a Louisiana Tech four-run seventh inning as the Cajuns fell to the Bulldogs 6-3 on Wednesday night at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
"When you are in a situation like this where you aren't going to get a lot of runs, you have to make plays and you have to pitch better," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "You can't let an inning get away from you. This is a winnable game from a pitching staff perspective. You have to stay away from the three-run inning, and we didn't do that."
Reliever Eric Carter (2-1) took the loss for the Cajuns (27-15) after giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits in 0.1 innings.
Mark Baughman (1-0) picked up the win for the Bulldogs (25-13) throwing 2.0 scoreless innings in relief, while Graham Ahlrich earned a nine-out save despite giving up two unearned runs in the final three innings of the contest.
Offensively, La Tech outhit Louisiana 12-4 with Sean Ullrich, Jonathan Washam, Chance Lunceford and Marshall Boggs each posting a pair of hits. Two of the Cajuns four hits in the contest were home runs.
Louisiana Tech took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Lunceford two-out RBI single to left field.
The Ragin' Cajuns pulled even in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run to right by Brenn Conrad. The home run was the fourth of the season for Conrad.
The Bulldogs broke the game open in the top of the seventh scoring four runs on five hits and two Louisiana errors to take a 5-1 advantage. Boggs scored the first run of the inning on a pair of Cajuns errors. Later in the inning, Raphael Gladu extended the lead to 3-1 on a pinch-hit RBI single through the right side of the infield. La Tech brought home the final two runs of the inning on RBI doubles by Ullrich and Jordan Washam.
Alex Pinero pulled the Cajuns within two runs in the bottom of the eighth as he launched a two-run blast over the fence in left to make the score 5-3. The home run was the second of the year for Pinero.
Ullrich added an insurance run in the ninth with a solo homer to right field to make the final 6-3.
The Cajuns return to action this weekend as they head to Arlington, Texas for a three-game series against UT Arlington starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
