Cajuns Baseball Falls To UT Arlington In Series Opener

4/30/2016 5:56:00 PM | Baseball

ARLINGTON, Texas – The 14th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team dropped its third straight contest falling to UT Arlington 4-1 in the series opener and opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The loss drops the Cajuns to 27-16 overall and 12-7 in league play, while the Mavericks improve to 23-20 on the season and 9-10 in the Sun Belt.

"When you are in what we are in, sometimes you can hit the ball well and not come away with the win," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "That's why they call it a grind. You have to keep strapping your cleats on and get after it. We are living on the razor's edge. Two flares shouldn't do you in, but with our struggles hitting the ball it's been costly for us."

Sophomore left-hander Gunner Leger (5-3) was tabbed with his third loss of the season after giving up three runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 5.2 innings.

Kadon Simmons (8-3) picked up the win as he limited the Cajuns to one run on seven hits in seven innings of work. Jacob Moreland notched his third save of the year tossing two scoreless innings to close out the contest.

UT Arlington had a slight edge in hits in the game outhitting the Ragin' Cajuns 10-9. UTA's Josh Minjarez had a game-high three hits. Both Brian Mills and Steven Sensley had a pair of hits for Louisiana in the contest.

In game one, Darien McLemore gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a solo home run over the fence in left field.

The Cajuns evened the contest at 1-all in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly to deep left field to score Stefan Trosclair. Trosclair walked with out in the inning and then moved to third on a Sensley single to right field.

UT Arlington regained the lead in the bottom half of the sixth on a two-out RBI flair single by Quintin Rohrbaugh to snuck inside the right field line to make the score 2-1. The Mavs added another run in the inning on an RBI flair single to right by Christian Hollie to take a 3-1 edge.

Louisiana threatened in the top of the eighth loading the bases with no outs after walks by Kyle Clement and Brenn Conrad and a Trosclair single. Moreland got Sensley to ground into a force out at the plate and then Pinero hit into a double play to end the threat.

UTA tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out RBI single up the middle by Josh Minjarez to make the final 4-1.
