Edwards Lifts Cajuns to 4-2 Victory In Sun Belt Opener
3/11/2016 9:32:00 PM | Baseball
TROY, Ala. – Junior outfielder Ishmael Edwards came through with a clutch RBI double in the ninth to lift the 16th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team to a 4-2 victory over Troy in the Sun Belt Conference opener Friday night at Riddle-Pace Field.
"It was a close game and we were able to hang with them and got a big clutch hit at the end," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "Gunner (Leger) did a good job tonight aside from one pitch. Whenever he takes the mound, he gives the team a chance to win, and he did that again tonight."
Leger held the Trojans (9-7, 0-1 Sun Belt) to two runs on four hits in a no decision. The sophomore posted his third quality start of the year with a season-high eight strikeouts and no walks.
Jevin Huval picked up his first career victory for the Cajuns (9-5, 1-0 Sun Belt) throwing a scoreless eighth inning with a strikeout.
Sophomore Dylan Moore equaled the program saves record in the game tallying his third save of the year and the 16th of his career. Moore tied the mark set by Matt Hicks from 2011-14.
Trojans starter Grant Bennett also was dealt a no decision after giving up two unearned runs on five hits in 7.1 innings pitched. Reliever Corey Childress took the loss giving up two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings.
Offensively, Louisiana outhit Troy 8-5 led by Brian Mills and Brad Antchak who both went 2-for-4 on the evening. Both Joe Robbins and Stefan Trosclair saw their hit streaks end in the contest.
The Cajuns broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth as Mills came home to score on a misplay by right fielder Joey Denison on a sinking liner hit by Robbins. Steven Sensley extended the Louisiana lead to 2-0 later in the inning delivering a two-out RBI single through the right side of the infield.
Troy evened the contest at 2-all in the bottom half of the sixth on a two-out, two-run homer down the left field line by Payton Fuller.
The Ragin' Cajuns pulled back in front in the top of the ninth on the Edwards double down the left field line scoring Antchak from second to take a 3-2 lead. In the next at bat, catcher Nick Thurman sent a single back up the middle to increase the advantage to 4-2.
Moore came on in the ninth and struck out the side to close out the game and tie the school career saves mark.
The two teams return to action tomorrow at 3 p.m. as right-hander Wyatt Marks (2-0) makes the start for Louisiana. Troy will counter with right-hander Lucas Brown (2-1). Fans can catch the game live on News Talk 96.5 KPEL-FM with Dan McDonald making the call.
