Troy Evens Series As Cajuns Baseball Falls 4-1
3/12/2016 6:28:00 PM | Baseball
TROY, Ala. – The 16th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team suffered its first conference loss on Saturday as the Cajuns fell 4-1 to Troy at Riddle-Pace Field.
Â
The loss ends an eight-game win streak for the Cajuns against the Trojans (10-7, 1-1 Sun Belt) and drops the team to 9-6 on the year and 1-1 in Sun Belt play.
Â
"We have to make better in-game adjustments as hitters," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "You can't let a guy get settled into the game like their guy did. (Will) Bacon did a great job of coming in and shutting the faucet off, but we couldn't turn things around at the plate. We've got to pitch better and hit better and not make an error at a critical part in the game."
Â
Troy starter Lucas Brown (3-1) posted a complete-game effort giving up just one unearned run on seven hits with six strikeouts.
Â
Starter Wyatt Marks (2-1) was handed his first loss of the season allowing four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 3.2 innings. Senior Will Bacon looked good in relief tossing 4.1 scoreless innings with a career-high seven strikeouts.
Â
The Trojans outhit the Ragin' Cajuns 10-7 in the contest with either team unable to record an extra base hit in the game. Cameron Sanders had a team-best three hits for Troy, while sophomore Steven Senley had a three-hit effort of his own.
Â
Louisiana took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as Hunter Kasuls singled home Brian Mills from second base. Mills reached on an error by shortstop Peyton Fuller and then stole second base.
Â
The lead would be short lived though as Troy plated a pair of runs in the bottom half of the third on an error by Cajuns shortstop Brad Antchak to go in front 2-1.
Â
The Trojans tacked on two more runs in the fourth on a two-run single up the middle by Trevor Davis.
Â
Louisiana threatened in the fifth and the eighth innings putting two runners on, but both times Brown would get out of the jam unscathed.
Â
The Cajuns return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the rubber match of the series with Troy. Louisiana will start freshman right-hander Nick Lee (2-0, 2.12 ERA), while the Trojans will go with left-hander Evan Hebert (1-2, 3.57 ERA). The game will be broadcast live on News Talk 96.5 KPEL-FM.
Â
Following the rubber match with Troy, the Cajuns will head to Natchitoches, La on Wednesday at 6 p.m. to face Northwestern State to close out their five-game road swing.
