Long, Cajuns Extend Win Streak To Seven With 72-65 Victory Over ULM

Marlin earns 100th win with Ragin' Cajuns
LAFAYETTE – Shawn Long scored six of his season-high 28 points in overtime while grabbing seven of his game-high 17 boards in the extra session as the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball team earned its seventh consecutive victory with a 72-65 decision over ULM on Tuesday at the Cajundome.
Louisiana (12-8, 8-3 SBC) capped off a five-game homestand and gave head coach Bob Marlin his 100th win as UL head coach in thrilling fashion. The Ragin' Cajuns, which trailed at halftime for the first time in 10 games at the Cajundome, rallied from an 11-point deficit midway through the second half by using a 21-4 run to take a 60-54 lead with 4:43 remaining.
"It was an exciting basketball game between two teams that have had some really good games over the years," Marlin, who is 100-85 in six seasons at Louisiana, said. "Last year's game here at the Cajundome (a 57-55 ULM win) was very similar … a two-point that game that went to the last possession."
The Ragin' Cajuns outscored ULM (10-12, 6-5 SBC), 8-1, in the extra period as a dunk by Long off a give-and-go with 3:32 remaining helped Louisiana pull away and stretch its homecourt win streak to 13 games dating back to last season.
Jay Wright's bucket with 2:56 left in the extra session gave Louisiana a 68-65 lead and Long, who set career-highs in free throws made (11) and attempts (16) sealed the win with four free throws in the final 12 seconds.
Long, who tied Graylin Warner for the most starts (117) in school history, finished 8-for-18 from the floor and added a pair of blocks and one steal in a season-high 42 minutes. The 6-foot-11 senior helped Louisiana take a 64-62 lead with 32 seconds remaining in regulation when he assisted on a Bryce Washington bucket, but ULM would send the game to overtime as Majok Deng hit a pair of game-tying free throws with 22 seconds left, and a potential 3-pointer a the buzzer by Kasey Shepherd bounced off the front iron.
"We got off to a decent start and then fell behind. (ULM) was doing a good job early in the game. Halftime, they were up one (33-32) and we come out in the second half and made a couple of adjustments, but we got off to a slow start, offensively in the second half … and that's the first time that has happened this season at home."
ULM, which had won three straight games against the Cajuns for the first time since the 1955-56 season, turned a 41-39 lead into a 50-39 cushion as Nick Coppola and Justin Roberson each scored on layups, before Jamaal Samuel added a layup and drained a 3-pointer with 11:40 remaining in the game.
A bucket by Roberson with 10:50 left kept ULM's lead at 11 before the Cajuns responded on both ends of the floor. Johnathan Stove hit a pair of free throws with 9:33 remaining that began a 19-2 run for the Ragin' Cajuns before Shepherd's steal and layup cut the Warhawk lead to 52-45.
Jay Hedgeman rebounded a missed free throw by Long and drained a 3-pointer from the left corner to cut ULM's lead to 54-49 before a bucket by Shepherd and four free throws by Long with 5:42 left would give the Ragin' Cajuns their first lead (55-54) since late in the first half.
Hayward Register followed with a 3-pointer and then scored on a layup after stripping the ball away from Deng that would give Louisiana its biggest lead of the night – 60-54 – with 4:43 remaining.
Louisiana led 62-56 with 1:38 to play when Long notched his 15th double-double of the season and 67th of his career when he slammed home a missed 3-pointer by Stove. But ULM would knot the score at 62-62 as DeMondre Harvey and Roberson each converted three-point plays for the Warhawks and Deng, the SBC's second-leading scorer (19.6 ppg.), would eventually send the game to overtime with his only points of the second half.
Stove scored 13 points and grabbed a career-high seven rebounds as Louisiana held a 51-30 advantage on the boards and limited the Warhawks to 24-for-62 (38.7 percent) from the floor in the game. Register added eight points off the bench for the Ragin' Cajuns while Washington grabbed six boards.
Deng, who scored a then career-high 30 points in an 81-70 win over Louisiana on Dec. 3, finished with 13 points for the Warhawks after going 0-for-8 from the floor after intermission. Roberson led ULM with 21 points while Samuel added 17, including five 3-pointers.
Louisiana will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 4, when it heads to Boone, N.C., to face Appalachian State (6-15, 4-6 SBC) in a 6:30 p.m. CST contest. The game will be televised on ESPN3.
