Red Wolves jumped out to a 27-15 lead after the first quarter

JONESBORO, AR – In a battle for first place in the Sun Belt Conference standings, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns fell victim to the Arkansas State Red Wolves, 83-56 at the Convocation Center Saturday afternoon.

The loss put an end to the Cajuns' (10-3, 3-1 SBC) three-game win streak. Louisiana senior guard Keke Veal paced the offense with 18 points, moving past Anna Petrakova and Mercedes Johnson for sole possession of fourth place on the program's all-time points scored list (1,270).

Sophomore forward Simone Fields matched her career high with 15 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor.

Fields scored the first nine points for the Cajuns who trailed by as many as 14 points (23-9) in the opening quarter.

Louisiana sliced the deficit to seven to start the second quarter courtesy of a three-pointer from junior Jaylyn Gordon and a layup by senior Kia Wilridge. The Cajuns were unable to draw any closer than 31-24 at the 6:43 mark of the second stanza, as Arkansas State ended the half with a 10-6 scoring surge.

The Red Wolves made six of their first seven shot attempts from the field in the first quarter and registered a 60.7% (17-of-28) by halftime.

Louisiana fell behind by as many as 22 points with just under 2 ½ minutes remaining in the third quarter, a period in which they were outscored, 23-15. The game was in doubt through the first 30 minutes with the Red Wolves in command, 64-45.

Arkansas State extended their home winning streak to 16 games with the victory.

"We need to be more patient and consistent on the offensive side," Ragin' Cajuns head coach Garry Brodhead said. "Our defensive wasn't playing up to par today, it's a learning experience and we can take this loss and say 'hey we have to weather the storm and stop opponents from going on offensive runs.'

"We can play better defense and push the ball more at the offensive point of attack."

The Cajuns look to get back on the winning track next Thursday, January 14 for a 4 p.m. tip-off at Georgia Southern.
