LAFAYETTE – The Ragin' Cajuns go for their ninth win in their last 11 games overall when they play at Georgia Southern this Thursday, Jan. 14 at 4 p.m. (CST). The Cajuns are 2-0 all-time against Georgia Southern and defeated the Golden Eagles, 69-57 in Statesboro last season.
Fourth-year head coach Garry Brodhead tied Ross Cook (57) for the second-most wins in program history in Louisiana's 65-58 win at Little Rock last Thursday. Brodhead trails only J. Kelley Hall (86 wins) on the Cajuns all-time coaching ledger.
Senior guard Keke Veal, the reigning LSWA Player of the Week, averaged a team-high 24.0 points per game last week at Little Rock and at Arkansas State. She passed Anna Petrakova and Mercedes Johnson on the program's all-time scoring list, climbing into fourth-place with 1,270 points.
Senior guard Kia Wilridge picked up four assists in two games last week, bumping her career total to 260. She is two helpers shy of passing Alicia McDaniel for sole possession of sixth place on the Cajuns' all-time list.
SETTING THE SCENE: The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (10-3, 3-1 SBC) look to stay unbeaten against the Georgia Southern Golden Eagles in the all-time series (2-0). The two foes meet for the third time this Thursday, Jan. 14 at 4 p.m. in the Hanner FieldHouse.
The Cajuns had their three-game win streak snapped at the hands of the Arkansas State Red Wolves last Saturday in Jonesboro. Louisiana currently stands tied for second place with Troy (both 3-1) in the Sun Belt Conference. Their defense is holding opponents to 56.7 points per game, second lowest in the conference (UT Arlington - 53.7 points per game).
Keke Veal's 48 points in two contests last week lifted her to third among Sun Belt Conference players in scoring at 16.6 points a game. Jaylyn Gordon is eighth at 13.7 points per game, while senior Kia Wilridge is ranked 11th with 12.5 points per game.
Georgia Southern has lost six of their last seven games overall and have lost two of their past three home games.
Junior guard Angel McGowan leads the Golden Eagles in scoring at 15.3 points per game. She is also first in steals (27) and three-point field goals (23).
COACH BRODHEAD AT THE HELM: Louisiana head coach Garry Brodhead is in his fourth season at the helm of the Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball program, finishing with 23 wins last season, the most in a single season since 2006-07 (25). Brodhead guided the team to 15 victories at home in 2014-15, a program record. He is tied with Ross Cook (57) for second-most wins in program history (57), trailing only J. Kelley Hall (86).
CAJUNS IN THE RANKINGS: The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team fell two spots to No. 24 in last week's CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll. The Cajuns garnered 108 total points in the rankings. The newest batch of rankings will be released Tuesday evening. Louisiana has been in the polls for the past five weeks overall.
WELCOME BACK: Returning from redshirt seasons are senior Brooklyn Arceneaux and junior Sylvana Okde. In 2013-14, Okde averaged 10.9 points and drained a team-high 74 three-pointers. That season, Arceneaux finished as the team's second-leading scorer (among players in at least 25 games played) averaging 10.5 points and adding 5.2 rebounds per contest. Arceneaux has averaged 4.0 points and 3.8 rebounds (third) in nine games as a starter and 13 games overall. She is shooting 35.4.% (23-of-65) from the floor and has come up with nine steals on the defensive end of the floor. She is also one of four players with double-digit assists (10). Okde has appeared in six games this season. She scored two points and picked up an assist in six minutes in an 84-36 win over Dillard back on Dec. 12.
FIELDS MATCHES A CAREER HIGH: Sophomore forward Simone Fields tied her career high with 15 points in the loss at Arkansas State last Saturday. She scored the first nine points for the Cajuns in the first half.
TRIPLE THREAT: Keke Veal, Kia Wilridge and Jaylyn Gordon combined for 56 of the Cajuns 65 points in the win over Little Rock this past Thursday. The 56 points were the second-highest total by the trio in a game this season. The three players produced 59 points on opening night at Ole Miss (Gordon - 29, Veal - 18, Wilridge - 12).
