Win Streak Ends as Ragin' Cajuns Fall to Texas State

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team was held to a season-low 42 points in a 46-42 defeat at the hands of the visiting Texas State Bobcats at the Cajundome Thursday night.

With the loss, the Cajuns fall to 14-4 and 7-2 in Sun Belt Conference play and saw their four-game win streak snapped.

"I think it was a great learning experience that we cannot play as a group of individuals," Ragin' Cajuns head coach Garry Brodhead said.

We have to do a better job of executing what we've been working on for the last three years," Brodhead added.  "Team defense, making sure we are covering out on defensive transition, blocking out, rebounding. There's no reason to not have a good night out on defense."

The two foes were caught up in an offensive struggle in the game's opening quarter. The Cajuns outscored the Bobcats, 7-5 as Louisiana shot just 3-of-16 from the floor, while Texas State hit just 2-of-11 buckets.

In the game's second quarter, redshirt junior Sylvana Okde splashed the first of two three-pointers in the team's opening three possessions.

Okde's second three-pointer stretched Louisiana's lead to 15-5, but five straight points by the Bobcats cut the lead to five at 15-10 with 7:04 left in the second quarter.

Back-to-back layups by seniors Brooklyn Arceneaux and Kia Wilridge extended the UL lead to 21-11, but an 11-2 scoring spurt by the Bobcats over the last 3:34 closed the gap to 23-22 at halftime.
The Cajuns had 14 points in the paint and 10 points off nine Texas State turnovers in the first half.

The second half saw the Cajuns score the first four points, making it a 27-22 contest. It remained a two-possession ballgame until the 1:45 mark of the third when sophomore Jodi Quinn was fouled on a made layup and completed the three-point play with a free throw, raising the Cajuns' advantage to 35-27.

Entering the fourth quarter with a 37-31 lead over the Bobcats, the two teams traded buckets for the first three possessions.

Texas State's Ericka May closed the game to 39-37 at the 2:27 mark with a layup and a steal on the next possession led to a go-ahead three-pointer from Raven Burns with 2:13 to play in the game.

Trailing 41-39, Wilridge initiated a steal and drove the length of the floor for a layup to tie the game at 41-41 with 43 seconds to go.

The Bobcats drew a foul and made both free throws on the ensuing possession.

Louisiana senior Keke Veal was fouled at the 20-second mark, but split the free throws, leaving the Cajuns in a 43-42 hole.

Texas State followed by splitting a pair of tosses from the charity stripe, giving them a 44-42 advantage.

With possession of the ball, the Cajuns grabbed a rebound off a missed jumper by senior Adrienne Prejean, but were called for a technical foul after calling for a timeout that was not available to them. Texas State's Ayriel Anderson made one of the two technical free throws, giving the Bobcats a 45-42 lead with three seconds left in the game.

Texas State was awarded possession with the technical foul and iced the game with a free throw to preserve the 46-42 win.

The Cajuns were held to a season-low 27.8% shooting from the floor. Louisiana outscored Texas State, 24-8 in the paint and earned 18 points off Bobcat turnovers.

Wilridge finished with team-highs in points (10) and rebounds (9). The Crowley, La., native also picked up four assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

The Cajuns return to action this Saturday, Jan. 30 for a 2 p.m. tip-off against UT-Arlington at the Cajundome.
