Women's Tennis Opens Season with 6-1 Victory

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team kicked off their 2016 spring season with a 6-1 victory over Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas Saturday morning.
Louisiana took its third straight season-opener with the victory on Saturday.
The Cajuns (1-0) claimed the doubles point as the duos of senior Melissa Burckhartt and sophomore Kelly Drew and junior Alexandra Way and sophomore Abby Johnson both went 1-0 in doubles competition. Burckhartt and Drew defeated Incarnate Word's pairing of Rachel Sadiq and Victoria Kareh, 6-3, while Way and Johnson prevailed, 6-2 over Matea Zemunik and Antea Dedic.
Louisiana dominated singles, taking five out of the six sets. Sophomore Elena Sava took down Sadiq, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2. Drew swept Matea Zemunik with scores of 6-3, 6-1, while Johnson defeated Kareh, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).
Burckhartt came out on top, 6-1, 6-2 against Sara Savedra while Way eliminated Maria Batchinsky, 6-1, 6-1.
"There was definitely some excitement leading into our first match," Ragin' Cajuns head coach Stephanie Vallejos said. "I'm proud of them for sticking to each point and battling back when the games got close.
"Going into our next match we want to stay focused and steady with each game plan."
The Ragin' Cajuns will conclude the weekend Sunday, Jan. 24 for a 10 a.m. first serve at Prairie View A&M.
