LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team came up just shy of a season-opening victory, falling narrowly by a 4-3 final to the visiting Lamar Cardinals at the Cajun Courts on Saturday.
In No. 1 doubles, Louisiana's (0-1) pairing of freshman Arthur Libaud and junior Will Huyton were edged by Lamar's Nikita Lis and Jeandre Hoogenboezem, 7-6. The Cajuns second doubles team of junior Coleman Wahlborg and senior Jake Wynan fell to Michael Feucht and Benny Schweizer 6-0. The third and final doubles team of senior Edgar Lopez and junior Eric Perez were defeated by Juuso Laitinen and Sebastian Santibanez by a final of 6-3.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first singles to Lamar, Libaud and Lopez won the next two singles rounds. Libaud defeated Lis, 7-6, 6-2, while Lopez topped Schweizer, 6-3, 6-2.
Lamar came back to claim the No. 4 and 5 singles, led by Santibanez (def. Wahlborg, 6-2, 6-2) and Hoogenboezem (def. Huyton, 6-3, 6-3).
Sophomore Vlad Kramarov took the No. 6 singles vs. Laitinen, 6-2, 6-3.
"Tough loss today, we just did not get off to a good start at the No. 2 doubles, which really kept the pressure on our other two doubles teams," Ragin' Cajuns head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "With our singles, we cannot give teams that much of a lead and put ourselves in a hole.
"I thought our 1, 2, 3 and 6 singles did a good job of competing, but there is a lot of room for improvement," he added. "I was very happy for Arthur Libaud for winning his first college match. It was also good for Edgar [Lopez] to get off on the right foot as we need him to have a big season."
The Cajuns men's tennis team will return to Cajun Courts this Monday, Jan. 18 for a 10 a.m. start against Xavier (La.).
