MONROE, La. -- The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team made its 2015-16 season debut this past weekend at the ULM Fall Tournament, picking up a slew of victories in the two-day event.
The field consisted of student-athletes from Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, New Orleans, Nicholls State, Northwestern State, South Alabama and Southern Miss.
"I was happy to see them compete against some other teams," Cajuns head coach Stephanie Vallejos said. "I was especially proud of [sophomore] Abby Johnson for playing a tough match, particularly in her last round. She found a way to regroup and get back into it mentally. To see her compete and see how tough she can be was a plus."
Johnson finished a perfect 3-0 on the weekend in her singles flight, defeating New Orleans' Brittany Johnson 6-1, 6-4, Nicholls State's Laia Charles 6-4, 6-4 and McNeese State's Caroline Erlandsson 6-7, 6-1, 7-6.
The doubles team of sophomore Elena Sava and senior Melissa Burckhartt defeated Northwestern State's duo of Iryna Vardanian and Barbora Kollarova 6-4 in the Back Draw Doubles A bracket.
Louisiana senior Juliette Clement and Johnson combined to defeat Nicholls State's Julia Kral and Isla Brock, 6-4 in the Flight B Doubles B bracket.
Sophomore Kelly Drew and junior Alexandra Way teamed to claim the Double Draw Flight B bracket taking down USM's duo of Claudia Castella and Tjasa Jerse 6-3, New Orleans' Soledad Calderon Arroyo and Anna Segarra Rius 6-1 and the pairing of Louisiana Tech's Meryl Culot and Manoela Chiacchio, 6-1.
In the Back Draw Singles Flight 3 bracket, Burkhartt fell to Louisiana Tech's Haley Ballinger.
In the Singles Draw Flight 2 bracket, Way took the first round match against Louisiana Tech's Manoela Chiacchio 6-3, 6-2 before falling to ULM's Ioana Popescu 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 in the semifinals.
