NATCHITOCHES – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team wraps up a season-opening stretch of four road matches on Tuesday at Prather Coliseum in Natchitoches, La., with a 7 p.m., match against Northwestern State.

The Ragin' Cajuns (0-3) began the 2015 season last weekend in Lubbock, Texas, at the Texas Tech Invitational. The squad was dealt straight set losses by Houston, Texas Tech and Utah State.

Louisiana played the entire Texas Tech Invitational without returning starters Sara Mossakowski and Stacey Reilly who are recovering from injury. That meant only one returning starter from 2014 was on the court, St. Martinville's Chanelle Gardner.

Head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot isn't going to let her team use the circumstances as an excuse.

"We can make excuses for ourselves or we can step up to the plate and play like I know we can," Mazeitis-Fontenot said. "Because our freshman class this year is very talented."

Gardner led the Ragin' Cajuns offense with 17 kills on opening weekend. Lafayette High alum McKenzie John contributed 14 kills in six sets on offense and collected 28 digs, with 15 digs coming in a start at libero against Utah State.

Freshman Sydney Davis was the first to put on the libero jersey as the Cajuns seek to replace former four-year starter Caitlyn Auxilien. Davis totaled 19 digs over six sets in starts against Houston and Texas Tech.

Though the results weren't favorable in Lubbock, the Ragin' Cajuns battled Houston and Texas Tech forging 42 tied scores combined between the two matches. Mazeitis-Fontenot saw signs of progress over the weekend.

"We made progress throughout each match, although it might not be evident in the stats," Mazeitis-Fontenot explained. "Our defense improved, our team play got better and we stayed aggressive on the serve and the attack."

Louisiana and NSU are meeting for the second straight season. The teams met in last season's Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Classic finale on Sept. 6, 2014, at Earl K. Long Gym with the Ragin' Cajuns claiming a 3-1 (19-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-15) victory.

The Demons, 2014 Southland Conference Tournament champions, are coming off a 1-2 showing at Ole Miss' Magnolia Invitational. Like the Cajuns, there are new faces on the court for NSU as four freshmen made their debuts last weekend.

The Ragin' Cajuns are visiting Prather Coliseum for the first time since 2009. NSU has been strong in the facility in recent years, tallying a 26-5 record since 2012.

After Tuesday's contest, Louisiana opens the home portion of its 2015 schedule hosting the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Volleyball Classic Friday-Saturday, Sept. 4-5. Joining the Ragin' Cajuns for the event is Houston, Jackson State and Nicholls State.

NOTEWORTHY
JESS TAKES THE REINS:
Jessica Bartczyszyn moved into the setter's role at Texas Tech, taking over for former starter Andrea Hole. Bartczyszyn averaged 7.11 assists per set.

DAVIS DEBUTS AT LIBERO: Sydney Davis was the first to wear the libero jersey as the Cajuns seek a replacement for former four-year starter Caitlyn Auxilien. Davis averaged 3.19 digs per set in matches against Houston and Texas Tech last Friday.

DOUBLE DUTY: McKenzie John contributed both offensively and defensively at Texas Tech. She threw down 14 kills in Friday's Houston-Texas Tech matches. On Saturday, she handled libero duties and collected 15 digs, the most by a Cajun over the weekend.

ROAD BLOCK: Chanelle Gardner threw up 106 blocks in 2014, the most since Lesley Mirarchi posted the same amount in 2010. At 208 career blocks, Gardner is just 37 blocks shy of the rally scoring era career Top 5.

CLIMBING THE CHARTS: Head coach Heather Mazeitis-Fontenot is nine wins shy of reaching second place on the program's victories list. Her 103 wins have her chasing Sherry LeBas (111) for second, then Wilo Colon (136) for the lead.
