Demons Rally to Top Cajuns in Five Sets

NATCHITOCHES – Northwestern State used an offensive surge over the final two sets to rally and defeat the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 18-25, 25-12, 15-9) here Tuesday evening at Prather Coliseum.
NSU (2-2) posted 22 kills and hit .442 over the fourth and fifth sets combined to rally from a 2-1 match deficit and spoil the top offensive performance of the season by the Ragin' Cajuns (0-4).
Louisiana finished with a season-high 44 kills powered by the quartet of Chanelle Gardner (11), Katey Kyle (10), Keely Hayes (9) and McKenzie John (9).
Louisiana hit .241 and .188 in claiming the second and third set, respectively, and grab a 2-1 lead in the match. The momentum moved to the Demons side in the fourth set, though, as the Ragin' Cajuns hit -.074 and the hosts won 25-12 to even the match.
Five kills in the first seven rallies of the fifth set staked NSU to a 5-2 lead. A subsequent 6-2 spurt, capped off by four consecutive kills, built more breathing room for the Demons at 11-4.
Tuesday's match brought a close to a season-opening stretch of four road games for the Ragin' Cajuns and served as the Demons' home opener.
Gardner's 11 kills were an individual high by a Cajun on the young season. The St. Martinville native has reached at least five kills in each of the season's four matches.
Setter Jessica Bartczyszyn dished out a season-best 35 assists. Freshman libero Sydney Davis finished with a team-high 17 digs for the Cajuns, an individual high this season.
NSU struck first in the match, outlasting Louisiana 25-22 in the opening set. The Demons held a slim 15-13 edge in kills and there were eight tied scores and three lead changes.
The Ragin' Cajuns dug out of a 10-8 deficit in the second set with a 6-0 run, capped by a block solo and kill from Kyle. NSU trimmed its deficit to 18-17, but the Cajuns forced the Demons to hit into two attack errors and added a kill from Bartczyszyn to extend the lead to 21-17.
Louisiana won the second set 25-20 to even the match, then grabbed the lead early in the third set with a kill from Kyle on the first rally. Back-to-back kills by John and Gardner would later put the Ragin' Cajuns head 6-3.
The Demons took a brief lead, 14-13, but Gardner and Kyle answered with kills to return the lead to Louisiana. The Ragin' Cajuns sealed the set with a block thrown up by Julia Pasch and Kyle followed by a service ace from Bartczyszyn which stretched the lead to 22-16.
The Ragin' Cajuns are back in action Friday-Saturday, Sept. 4-5 opening the home portion of the 2015 schedule with the Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic at Earl K. Long Gym. In addition to Louisiana, the event also includes Houston, Jackson State and Nicholls State. The Ragin' Cajuns start tournament play against Jackson State at 7 p.m., on Friday, Sept. 4.
