The Ragin' Cajuns have won seven of their last eight games and will make their second straight postseason appearance when they open up the CollegeInsider.com Tournament on Tuesday at Incarnate Word.
THE LAST TIME OUT
Louisiana got 17 points off the bench from Devonta Walker, but even a late comeback attempt could not erase a 24-point second half deficit as the top-seeded Georgia State Panthers moved on with a 83-79 win in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at Lakefront Arena.
The Cajuns trailed by 14 points at the half after turning the ball over 13 times in the opening 20 minutes, and by as much as 24 points early in the second half. But the Cajuns held the Panthers to just five field goals in the final 12 minutes of play and ended the game by scoring 15 of the game's final 18 points.
Four Ragin' Cajuns finished in double figures, led by Walker's 17, his most since scoring a career-high 23 at Northwestern State on December 20. Kasey Shepherd hit four triples, finishing with 16 points, five assists and three steals.
Shawn Long and Bryce Washington both put in 10 points apiece, combining for 15 rebounds, while Jay Wright led the Cajuns with six assists. Hayward Register connected on three treys, and Johnathan Stove seven points and Steven Wronkoski added five with each aiding in the Cajuns late rally.
The Cajuns hit eight three-point baskets on the night, with six coming in the second half and three in the game's final minute. But UL also finished with 21 turnovers with GSU picking off 17 steals.
UP NEXT
The CollegeInsider.com Tournament is a 32-team tournament that utilizes the old NIT form with out a direct-advance bracket. With a win UL would move on in the CIT, playing in the second round on either March 20 or 21.
• UL's entry into the CIT is the program's 14th official appearance in postseason since beginning NCAA competition in the 1970-71 season.
• Louisiana had its seven-game win streak snapped in the SBC Tournament quarterfinal against Georgia State. The seven-game streak was the longest by any SBC team this season.
• Shawn Long became the third player in UL history to reach 1,000 rebounds with his 11-rebound performance in the quarterfinal game vs Texas State.
• The Cajuns turned the ball over just six times in the regular-season finale at Arkansas State, its lowest turnover total of the season and the fourth time with less than 10 turnovers this year.
• Kasey Shepherd was named to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament all-tournament team following the event. The junior guard averaged 16.0 ppg, 3.5 apg and 1.5 spg while shooting .429 (6-for-14) from beyond the three-point line.
