UTA Rushes By Louisiana In Second Half

2/7/2015 4:49:00 PM | Men's Basketball

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns shot just 28.0 percent from the field in the second half, and the UT Arlington Mavericks took advantage to erase an 11-point deficit and knock off the Cajuns, 84-69, on Saturday afternoon at the Cajundome.

Louisiana (13-11, 7-6 SBC) shot 50.0 percent in the first period and led 45-41 at the break, but the Mavs (13-9, 7-5 SBC) opened the second half on a 21-5 run and led the final 17:18 of the game to win against the Cajuns for the first time since 1982.

Shawn Long picked up his fifth straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, but was saddled with foul trouble for much of the second half. Bryce Washington led UL with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Hayward Register hit three of the Cajuns' five threes on the night and finished with 11 points.

The Mavericks put three players in double figures, led by Jorge Bilbao's career-high 18 points. They did much of their damage from the foul line, hitting 21-of-30 tries, including 15-of-20 in the second half alone. Meanwhile, UL had its worst game of conference play at the foul line, hitting just 14-of-24 tries.

Register got the Cajuns off to a quick start by nailing threes on each of UL's first two possessions. But following those two early buckets, the Cajuns went just 3-for-18 the rest of the way from beyond the arc.

Louisiana scored the first eight points of the game and led 18-7 nearly seven minutes into the game after a pair of free throws from Jay Wright. But the Mavs cut the lead to just two after the midway point of the half and tied it up one possession later on a layup from Brandon Williams.

The Cajuns answered and built the lead back up to as much as seven on consecutive scores from Washington and a short jumper from Long. Kasey Shepherd nailed a three to extend the lead back to four after UTA had cut it to 40-39 and Wright hit a contested midrange jump shot as the halftime buzzer sounded to send UL into the locker room up 45-41.

But the second half was all UTA from the get-go with Louisiana scoring just two field goals in the first nine minutes of the half. In that span the Mavericks managed to turn a four-point deficit into a 10-point lead.

UTA hit 56.6 percent from the field in the second period, while the Cajuns hit just seven of 25 tries (28.0 percent) and one of its seven tries from three-point range.

The lead swelled to as much as 17 points after an 11-2 UTA run quelled any UL momentum from cutting the deficit back to single digits on a pair of foul shots from Devonta Walker with 8:33 to play.

Louisiana will have a pair of road games on its plate next week when it travels to ULM on Thursday, followed by a trip to Troy on Saturday.
