FOR STARTERS
A key road swing looms for the Cajuns this week, starting Thursday when they travel to league-leading ULM to try and even the season series with the Warhawks. ULM has not swept the season series with UL since joining the Sun Belt Conference, and will be going for their first consecutive wins against the Cajuns since the 1969-70 and 1970-71 seasons.
THE LAST TIME OUT
The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns shot just 28.0 percent from the field in the second half, and the UT Arlington Mavericks took advantage to erase an 11-point deficit and knock off the Cajuns, 84-69, on Saturday afternoon at the Cajundome.
Louisiana shot 50.0 percent in the first period and led 45-41 at the break, but the Mavs opened the second half on a 21-5 run and led the final 17:18 of the game to win against the Cajuns for the first time since 1982.
Shawn Long picked up his fifth straight double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, but was saddled with foul trouble for much of the second half. Bryce Washington led UL with 13 points and eight rebounds, while Hayward Register hit three of the Cajuns' five threes on the night and finished with 11 points.
The Mavericks put three players in double figures, led by Jorge Bilbao's career-high 18 points. They did much of their damage from the foul line, hitting 21-of-30 tries, including 15-of-20 in the second half alone. Meanwhile, UL had its worst game of conference play at the foul line, hitting just 14-of-24 tries.
UP NEXT
Louisiana will travel to Troy for a Saturday afternoon contest with the Trojans, looking to complete the season sweep after a 91-64 win in Lafayette on January 3. That will leave five league games remaining on the slate with the Cajuns next at home on February 19 against Texas State.
• The Cajuns are shooting .709 from the free throw line this year, leading the SBC. UL hasn't shot better than .700 as a team from the foul line since the 1993-94 team shot .716 from the stripe.
• Local sophomore Hayward Register exploded for career highs in points (20) and three-point field goals (6) in Thursday's 81-66 win over Appalachian State.
• Long has five straight double-doubles entering Thursday. It is the second time in his career he has put together at least five straight double-doubles. His career high is six straght as a freshman.
• The Ragin' Cajuns have allowed three of their last five opponents to shoot better than .500 from the field, while Cajun opponents have shot under .400 in UL's last two victories.
• UL's win at Texas State was also the the first time this year in 12 tries that the Cajuns have rallied from a deficit at the 5-minute mark of the game.
