LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team will open up Sun Belt Conference play as part of a pair of weekend matches at Troy and Samford beginning Saturday.
The Cajuns (3-4) dropped two of three matches last weekend at Southern Miss and New Orleans, while knocking off Jackson State in Hattiesburg. UL was scheduled to take on Southeastern Louisiana at home on Wednesday, but the match was cancelled due to inclement weather in the area.
Kelly Drew has been a very pleasant surprise for UL in her freshman season, rocketing up the lineup with a perfect 6-0 record in singles play. She moved into the No. 1 spot in the lineup in the Cajuns' last two matches, and has only dropped one seven matches she has started to date. Elena Sava and Alexandra Way have each picked up three singles wins for the Cajuns as well.
Saturday marks the opening of Sun Belt Conference play for the Ragin' Cajuns at Troy, a team entering the weekend with a 4-4 record after a pair of wins last week against Nicholls and Alabama A&M.
The Trojans have won meetings with the Cajuns each of the past two seasons, including a narrow 4-3 win last season.
The Cajuns will square off with Samford on Sunday, a team who has been in the national rankings this season and is 4-0 against unranked opponents. All four of the Bulldogs' (4-4) losses have come at the hands of opponents tabbed in the nation's top 75.
Most recently Samford rolled by Lamar by a 6-1 count, just two days after dropping a 6-1 decision to No. 71 Mississippi State.
First serve against Troy is set for 11:00 a.m., while Sunday's match at Samford is set for noon.
