LAFAYETTE, La. – With the start of the 2015 season only days away here is part one of a two-day team preview of the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns baseball team heading into the series opener with UTSA. Today we take a look at the position players as the Cajuns will have to replace seven starters from the 2014 squad.

Catchers

With the departure of Michael Strentz in the draft, junior Nick Thurman will step into the starting position for the Cajuns. Thurman played in 32 games including 13 starts as a backup in 2014. He hit .222 with three doubles, a triple and 13 RBI.

Senior Evan Powell will also see time behind the plate after seeing action as an outfielder and corner infielder a year ago. Powell posted a .250 average with four home runs and 14 RBI in 29 games.

Infielders

Louisiana's depth in 2015 is in the infield with seven players that look to factor into this year's lineup.

At first base, senior Greg Davis moves into the starting role. Davis got hot at the end of the 2014 campaign and ended the season with a .314 average registering five doubles, a triple and three home runs while driving in 23 runs. Freshman Gunner Leger is also expected to see action at first base during the season.

Newcomer Stefan Trosclair is slotted to be the opening day starter at second base with Brenn Conrad and Kennon Fontenot adding depth at the position. All three are recent additions to the squad with Conrad as the only player to suit up in a Cajuns uniform having played in 18 games in 2013 before transferring. Junior Joe Robbins also can step in and play at second as well.

All-American Blake Trahan anchors the infield at shortstop. Trahan has made 129 starts in two years at the position and is coming off of season where he hit .355 with 49 RBI and a .455 on base percentage. Trahan is the 2015 Sun Belt Conference Preseason Player of the Year and was recently tabbed to the Golden Spikes Award preseason watch list.

Both Fontenot and Robbins will backup Trahan at short with Robbins making one career start at the position.

At third, Robbins and Tyler Girouard are expected to see a lot of action with Conrad and Fontenot adding depth at the position. Girouard has 32 career starts at third, but mostly saw action as a designated hitter in 2014 due to a leg injury hitting .324 with 11 doubles and 32 RBI. Powell and Davis can also suit up at third with both seeing action at the position in 2014.

Outfielders

In the outfield the Cajuns return Dylan Butler in right field. Butler hit .298 in 2014 and had 11 doubles, six home runs and 31 RBI. Butler has 112 career starts in the outfield including 90 in right field making 40 starts in 2014.

Junior College transfer Derek Herrington is expected to start in centerfield, while Powell, Kyle Clement and newcomer Brian Mills will vie for the third starting spot in the outfield. Clement has the most starts in the outfield among the group with seven, while Powell has made six.

Adam Angelle and Jam Williams could also factor into to the outfield for the Ragin' Cajuns with Angelle missing the 2014 season with an injury and Williams in his first year with the program.

The Cajuns open the season Feb. 13-15 against UTSA in San Antonio, Texas at Roadrunner Park. Louisiana's home opener is Feb. 20-22 against Stony Brook at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field. Season tickets are still available for the 2015 season. Fans can order tickets by visiting RaginCajuns.com or by calling (337) 265-2100.
