Cardinals Clip Cajuns In Home Opener

LAFAYETTE, La. – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team opened up its home season on Saturday at Cajun Courts, dropping a closely-fought 4-3 decision to Lamar.
It was the final match for Louisiana (2-2) before the Cajuns hit the road for three straight matches against nationally-ranked opponents, beginning next week at national No. 1 USC.
The Cajuns opened up with an early 1-0 lead after claiming the match's doubles point with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. Jake Wynan and Damian Farinola did their job with a 6-4 win over Lamar's (1-0) second pair Jeandr Hoogenboezem and Benny Schwizer, while freshman Vlad Kramarov and sophomore Will Huyton defeated Juuso Laitinen and Mikko Rajamaki (7-5) in No. 3 doubles.
But the Cardinals did their damage in the singles competition, taking four of the six points to pull out the match's comeback win in their season opener, their first win over UL since 2010. Kramarov and Farinola picked up the two UL wins in singles play with Kramarov moving to 3-1 on the year with a (6-4, 6-3) win over Schwizer at No. 4 singles. Meanwhile, Farinola moved to 2-1 on the season with a (7-6, 6-3) victory over Hoogenboezem at the No. 3 slot.
The Cajuns were just a point away from pulling out the victory, but Lamar managed to pull out a pair of three-set matches at the Nos. 2 and 6 spots in the lineup to hang on. Jake Wynan won the first set of his match against Feucht before falling (4-6, 6-4, 7-6) in three sets. Freshman Dimitris Stavropoulos, meanwhile, rallied from being shut out of his first set against Rajamaki to take the second set before dropping the point (6-0, 5-7, 6-2) at No. 6 singles.
UL will next take on USC on Jan. 23 in Los Angeles before squaring off with either No. 50 UNC Wilmington or No. 56 Santa Clara the following day. The Cajuns will then travel to Waco, Texas, for a Jan. 29 meeting with No. 6 Baylor.
