Men's Tennis Falls At No. 1 USC
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The No. 73 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team dropped the first match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Friday, falling 4-0, to national No. 1 USC.
The Cajuns had a stiff test going into the day against the top team in the country with the Trojans sporting five ranked players on the singles side, in addition to the No. 1 doubles team in the land.
Damian Farinola was the lone Cajun to take a set from the Trojans as he held a (6-3, 3-2) lead on Henry Ji at No. 5 singles before play was called after USC clinched the match. USC's Yannick Hanfman, the nation's No. 3 singles player, provided the clinching point with a (6-2, 6-2) win over Edgar Lopez, who was making his season debut, in No. 1 singles play.
The Cajuns had a trio of matches go unfinished in singles play, with the Trojans scoring points at No. 4 and No. 6 singles for their final points.
USC also took the doubles point with the duo of Hanfmann and Roberto Quiroz, the nation's No. 1 doubles team, getting past Jarred Wynan and Coleman Wahlberg (6-3) in the No. 1 slot and the tandem of Nick Crystal and Connor Farren getting by Jake Wynan and Will Huyton (6-2) in the No. 3 spot. The UL team of Lopez and Farinola trailed 5-4 in a close match against de Vroome and Ji when doubles play was called.
Louisiana fell to 2-4 with the loss and will now square off with No. 50 UNC Wilmington at 2:00 p.m. PT on Saturday in the weekend finale.
