TROY, Ala. – After taking the first game of the doubleheader 11-8, the second-ranked Ragin' Cajuns baseball team shutout Troy 11-0 in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday to sweep the Trojans and pick up its 30th win of the season.
Louisiana (30-3, 11-1 Sun Belt) has now won six in a row and is off to its best start in school history. The Cajuns have scored 11-plus runs in their last four decisions. The sweep is also the fifth of the season for the squad.
"To sweep on the road is such a positive thing for our program," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "It's so hard to win a series on the road much less sweep a team. If you take out one bad inning, we played some great ball all weekend and it was really complete domination. You can't get where we are right now without a complete team effort. Our guys swung the bat all weekend up and down the lineup. We were also able to get great efforts from our pitching staff even though we had to shuffle our rotation."
Senior Seth Harrison tied a school record with five hits going a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with three doubles, a home run and drove in four runs. Harrison extended his streak of reaching base to 19 games and now has an eight-game hit streak.
Jace Conrad was also perfect at the plate in the nightcap going 3-for-3 with triple, one RBI and scored twice. Conrad also increased his hit streak to a team-best 17 games and has reached now in 23 straight games.
As a team, the Cajuns had 14 hits posting 10-plus hits for the fourth straight game and 22nd time on the season.
Cody Boutte was outstanding on the mound limiting the Trojans (16-16, 4-7 Sun Belt) to one hit in six innings to improve to 4-0. Boutte had three strikeouts and three walks and faced one over the minimum in the first five innings.
Jeremy McGowan was saddled with the loss for Troy to fall to 2-3 on the year. McGowan was touched up for six runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of work.
Harrison got the Cajuns on the board in the first inning singling in Blake Trahan from second.
Louisiana broke things open in the top of the second scoring five runs on four hits to get out to a 6-0 advantage. After Caleb Adams doubled to lead off the inning, Conrad tripled down the right field line to bring home Adams. The double by Adams increased his streak of reaching base to 27 games and moved him to a nine-game hit streak.
Later in the inning, Conrad came home to score on a groundout by Chase Compton. The Cajuns plated the final three runs of the inning with two outs.
The Ragin' Cajuns added four more runs in the top of the third. Dylan Butler drove in the first run of the inning on a double to center. After a Compton RBI groundout, Michael Strentz doubled down the right field line to score Butler. Harrison recorded his second double of the game in the inning to score Trahan giving the Cajuns a 10-0 edge.
Harrison added the final run of the game in the top of the fifth sending a solo blast well over the fence in left. The homer was the eighth of the season for Harrison who leads the team.
In the top of the seventh, Harrison tied the record with his third double of the day sending a 2-0 pitch down the left field line.
The Cajuns open a five-game week on Tuesday at 6 p.m. as they host New Orleans at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field. Following the game with the Privateers, Louisiana will head to McNeese State on Wednesday night before hosting UALR in a three-game series over the weekend at the Tigue.
"The good thing is that the doubleheader worked out great for our team," Robichaux said. "We will be able to give our guys the day off tomorrow, and that's huge with us playing five games next week."
