Mavericks Rally In Ninth To Defeat Cajuns In Series Finale

ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth to get a 5-4 walk-off win against the top-ranked Ragin' Cajuns baseball team on Sunday in the series finale at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The Cajuns went into the bottom of the ninth with a 4-1 lead and saw the advantage quickly evaporate as the Mavericks scored three runs to tie the game by the time the first out was recorded. Eric Tate provided the heroics for UTA (17-23, 9-9 Sun Belt) driving a single through the left side of the infield to score the game-winning run.

The loss drops Louisiana to 36-5 on the season and 16-2 in the Sun Belt. It also ends the Cajuns streak of 16 straight road wins to open the year.

Starter Cody Boutte posted a quality start holding the Mavericks to just one unearned run on two hits in seven innings. Boutte had four walks and three strikeouts in the no decision.

"Boutte was great for us today," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "He kept a good hitting team in check for most of the game, and then (Matt) Plitt came on and did his job in the eighth. We just didn't get it done in the ninth and that cost us the ballgame."

Greg Milhorn was tabbed with his second loss of the year after giving up four runs on two hits in the ninth as he did not record an out.

Colin Tornberg earned the victory for UT Arlington throwing three scoreless innings. Tornberg allowed just one base runner in the three innings on a double by Blake Trahan.

The Ragin' Cajuns outhit the Mavericks 9-6 in the contest with Trahan and Jace Conrad each posting two hits. Conrad increased his on base streak to 31 tying Caleb Adams for the longest streak this season.

Chase Compton put the Cajuns up in the top of the second driving in Conrad on a single to right center. Two batters later, Trahan sent a single through the left side of the infield to plate Dylan Butler. Compton moved to third on a fly out to right by Ryan Leonards and then came in to score on a wild pitch by UTA starter Daniel Milliman.

Caleb Adams brought a run home in the top of the fifth as he singled in Seth Harrison from second. Harrison reached on a one-out double to left field.

The Mavericks got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Tate scored on an infield single by Ryan Bottger.

UT Arlington cut the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth when Bottger scored on a wild pitch by Milhorn. Levi Scott pulled the Mavs within a run later in the inning on a RBI double to left center. After Reagan Bazar came on to try and end the threat, pinch hitter Brandon Vinyard tied the game on a RBI ground out to first.

The Ragin' Cajuns return home for four games at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field starting on Tuesday at 6 p.m. as they host in-state foe McNeese State. Following the contest with the Cowboys, Louisiana will host Texas State in a three-game conference series starting on Friday at 6 p.m.
