LAFAYETTE, La. – The top-ranked Louisiana baseball team plated 14 runs in its final two at bats to extend its win streak to 14 games defeating Southern 17-3 on Wednesday night in the fifth game of a nine-game homestand at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

"You have to learn to win in a lot of different ways," head coach Tony Robichaux said. "We keep showing that we can do that this year. That is what has lead to our success. Wednesdays can be tough when you play five games in a week. I thought our team keep grinding and competing for nine innings."

Shortstop Blake Trahan quietly posted four hits in the game to lead the Cajuns (24-2, 6-0 Sun Belt). The four-hit effort ties a career high for Trahan set on Feb. 22, 2013 against UTSA. Louisiana outhit the Jaguars 16-6 on the night with eight of the nine starters posting at least one hit.

Senior Caleb Adams increased his streak of reaching base to 20 games with his single in the seventh inning. Adams went 2-for-5 at the plate with a triple, four RBI and scored two runs. Jace Conrad also had a strong performance going 3-for-4 with a double, drove in a run and scored twice as well. Conrad has now reached base in 16 straight games and boasts a team-best 10-game hit streak.

Six Ragin' Cajuns relievers combined to throw five shutout innings to close out the game. Senior Matt Hicks was the winning pitcher moving to 3-0 on the year after throwing 1.2 scoreless innings with a strikeout.

"It's not easy for guys to come in out of the pen against pressure situations, but they kept doing their job tonight," Robichaux added.

Southern reliever Jacob Polk was saddled with the loss giving up three runs on three hits in two innings.

Chase Compton gave the Cajuns an early lead in the bottom of the second as he drove in Conrad from third on a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Jaguars notched three runs on four hits in the top of the third to go in front 3-1. Southern plated its first run of the game on a RBI single by Lance Jones. Marcus Tomlin and Brian Rowry also had RBI singles in the inning.

Louisiana chipped away at the lead in the bottom half of the third when Seth Harrison came in to score on a sac fly to center by Conrad to make the score 3-2.

Harrison equaled the game at 3-all in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI single to left field.

After two scoreless innings, the Cajuns jumped out to a 10-3 advantage in the bottom of the seventh plating seven runs on four hits, four walks and an error. Catcher Michael Strentz broke the tie dropping a two-run double down the right field line to make the score 8-3. Later in the inning, Dylan Butler crushed a three-run shot deep into the pine trees in left for his second home run of the season. The Ragin' Cajuns scored the final two runs of the inning on a bases-loaded walk to Adams and a wild pitch.

The Cajuns put the game out of reach in the bottom of the eighth adding seven more runs on four hits, a walk, three hit batsmen and an error. A three-run triple by Adams highlighted the scoring in the inning.

The nine-game homestand at the Tigue continues on Friday at 6 p.m as the Ragin' Cajuns welcome WKU to town for a three-game series. Following the series with the Hilltoppers, Louisiana will face Tulane on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the final game of the homestand.
