Ragin' Cajuns Women’s Tennis Wins At Southern, 6-1

BATON ROUGE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team opened a three-match road swing with a 6-1 victory at Southern on Wednesday afternoon at the SU Tennis Courts.

The win improves Louisiana to 2-0 on the season, while the Jaguars drop to 0-2 on the year.

"I am happy with the improvement the team has shown from our opening match to today," head coach Greg Harkins said. "The girls have really bought into the process and are getting better each time out on the court. I really like what I am seeing out of this young team, and it's encouraging to see us take a step forward like we did today against an in-state opponent on the road."

Louisiana jumped out to a 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point for the second straight match. The duo of Nelo Phiri and Nicole Breaux clinched things on court one defeating Laura Syori and Kendall Bunch, 8-6.

Alexandra Way and Julie Cremers notched their second straight doubles win on court three taking an 8-5 decision from Morgan Taylor and Camara Davis.

In singles play, the Ragin' Cajuns won 11 of 13 sets against the Jaguars as sophomore Melissa Burckhartt didn't drop a game at the No.4 position winning 6-0, 6-0 against Taylor.

Breaux clinched the match for Louisiana on court two with a strong 6-2, 6-0 showing against Syori, while Way only lost one game on the afternoon to pick up her second singles win in as many attempts.
