Tennis faces Southern before heading west to battle Texas State, UTSA

LAFAYETTE – Fresh off a victory in its 2014 spring debut, the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team begins a three-match roadtrip beginning today (Wednesday) at Southern University.

The match, the first of eight matches for the Ragin' Cajuns against in-state opponents this season, is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start. Following its match against Southern (0-2), the Ragin' Cajuns (1-0) will head west for matches against Texas State (Saturday, Feb. 8, 1 p.m.) and UTSA (Sunday, Feb. 9, 11 a.m.).

"The girls are anxious to get out on the road and look forward to this week's match play," Ragin' Cajuns coach Greg Harkins said. "Coach (Jeffery) Conyers at Southern always has a competitive squad and we expect the same for the match."

The Ragin' Cajuns opened the spring portion of their schedule with a 4-3 win over Jackson State last Saturday, taking the doubles point with a pair of 8-1 victories, before Nelo Phiri (No. 1), Alexandra Way (No. 5) and Juliette Clements (No. 6) earned victories in singles competition.

"We learned a lot from our home opener; we are motivated and committed to our goals," Harkins said. "We expect to play to our potential and improve with each match. The ladies have set high expectations for themselves and we will push them to be accountable for their play individually and as teammates. It's all part of the journey."

The Ragin' Cajuns will open their Sun Belt Conference schedule on Saturday against league newcomer Texas State (1-2). The Bobcats opened the season with losses to Texas Tech and Wyoming before posting a 5-2 victory against UTEP in their home opener on Feb. 1.

"This will be our first encounter with Texas State since they joined the Sun Belt Conference," Harkins said. "We have tremendous respect for coach (Tory) Plunkett and what the Bobcats bring to the court. They have a tough, gritty squad that will test our mental toughness and it will be a good test early in the season.

"We know that a lot will be on the line. This match is important in setting the stage for April (17-20) at the Sun Belt Conference Championships in New Orleans."

Louisiana will close out the week on Sunday with a non-conference match against Conference USA opponent UTSA (1-4). The Roadrunners opened their spring campaign with road losses to Texas, Houston and New Mexico, defeated McNeese State in their home opener on Saturday before falling to UTEP in a 4-3 decision on Sunday.

"Once again we expect a highly competitive match," Harkins said. "UTSA has already played some tough tennis beating a solid McNeese State team this past week. Coach (Erin) Scott and her crew will be ready for the fight. We will have a good idea where we stand at the end of this weekend."

After completing its first road swing, the Ragin' Cajuns will play four of their next five matches at Cajun Courts beginning with a Feb. 12 doubleheader against Alcorn State (2 p.m.) and Xavier (5 p.m.). Admission is free.
