HOUSTON, Texas – The Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team opens a five-match road swing on Sunday with an 11 a.m. contest against Rice at Jake Hess Tennis Stadium.
"The guys were able to get in another productive week of practice, so we look to improve upon our performance from Tuesday," head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "Playing on the road takes a sense of togetherness and willingness. You have to put the team ahead of your own agenda and fight side by side with your teammate in the midst of adversity. The great teams thrive in that environment."
Louisiana (7-2) has won three straight matches and six of its last seven coming off of a 4-2 win against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday at Cajun Courts.
Jake Wynan, Hunter Johnson and Carl Alberton are all riding a three-match win streak in singles competition. Alberton was recently named the Sun Belt Conference Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week after his gusty performance to clinch the contest versus the Islanders.
Rice (2-6) comes into the contest having dropped its last four dual matches. The Owls fell to No.30 Northwestern 4-0 before losing to No.62 Cornell 6-1 on the road last weekend. Rice holds a 13-8 edge in the series having won a tight 4-3 decision a year ago in Houston.
"We expect a dog fight with the owls," Jeffrey added. "It should be a good old fashion scrap that's going to come down to inches on the court. Let's see if our guys are willing to go the extra inch for their teammates and university."
After the match with the Owls, the Cajuns are slated to head to Corpus Christi, Texas to compete in the prestigious HEB Tournament of Champions from Feb. 28 to March 1.
