Cajuns to face tough test in Wednesday doubleheader

LAFAYETTE – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team returns to Cajun Courts on Wednesday for the first time since its season-opener when it plays host to Alcorn State and Xavier in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.

Admission is free and open to the public.

The Cajuns (2-2), who played their last three matches on the road, return home for the first time since a 4-3 victory over Jackson State on Feb. 1. Louisiana opened their three-match road trip with a 6-1 win at Southern on Feb. 5 before falling at Texas State and UTSA.

"This could be our toughest day of the season, both teams are well coached and will test us mentally and physically," head coach Greg Harkins said. "Our girls understand the importance of the matches, we are focused on the task. Playing a doubleheader will push us to our limits and we look forward to it."

Three players – Nelo Phiri (No. 1), Alexandra Way (No. 5) and Juliette Clement (No. 6) – have posted 2-2 records on the season for the Cajuns. The doubles team of Clement and Melissa Burckhartt has posted a 2-0 record at No. 2, with the No. 1 team of Phiri and Nicole Breaux, and the No. 3 tandem of Way and Julie Cremers each splittling in four matches on the season.

Alcorn State (0-2), the 2013 SWAC Tournament runner-up, is looking for its first win of the season after dropping matches to Southeastern Louisiana and ULM.

"Coach (Anthony) Dodgen's Alcorn teams challenge for (SWAC) conference championships year in and year out. He plays a tough schedule and his team competes at a high level."

Xavier (1-1), ranked No. 3 in the NAIA Coaches' Preseason Poll, earned a 9-0 victory over cross-town rival Loyola last Friday before suffering a 4-0 loss to Tulane on Sunday.

"Coach (Alan) Green is one of the most successful coaches ever at Xavier and his program annually ranks at the top of all NAIA schools. It's another in-state school with quality players … they will challenge us from the first serve."
