Cajuns Open Spring Season With 6-1 Victory At Incarnate Word

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team opened the 2014 spring season with a 6-1 victory over Incarnate Word on Friday afternoon.

The Cajuns (1-0) jumped out to an early lead after clinching the doubles point. Edgar Lopez and Damian Farinola teamed up to defeat UIW's Jair Assuncao and Tucker Brown on court two, 6-2, while Rick de Groot and Jake Wynan bested Brandon Davis and Johan Haerens on court three, 6-0. The victory is the fourth straight for Wynan and de Groot dating back to the 2013 season.

"The guys came out strong at No. 2 and 3 doubles and set the tone for the doubles point," head coach Mark Jeffrey said. "In singles, the Johnson twins got us off to a quick start at (No.) 5-6 singles going up 3-0. Rick, Damian, and Jake all had good matches"

"Overall, the guys look forward to improving with each match. We look forward to our next match Sunday"

In singles competition, Louisiana picked up wins on lines 2-6 with four of the five winning in straight sets. Farinola notched his fifth straight singles win in dual match play dating back to last season after taking a three-set match against Josip Smoljan, 6-5 (7-3), 5-6, 10-8.

The Ragin' Cajuns return to action on Sunday at 12 p.m. when they head to College Station, Texas for a showdown with 12th-ranked Texas A&M.
