LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – UALR piled up nine extra base hits on its way to a 7-2 victory over the Ragin' Cajuns baseball team here Saturday afternoon at Gary Hogan Field, evening the weekend series between the two teams.
The Trojans (16-17, 5-9 Sun Belt) produced four of their runs off extra base hits, the first coming off a sequence of back-to-back doubles in second inning that gave the hosts the lead for good.
Blake Huffman scattered eight hits – all singles – and held the Cajuns (23-11, 7-7 Sun Belt) to two runs over 6 1/3 innings. Reliever Dillon Moritz pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, surrendering just one hit, to pick up the save.
Cord Cockrell turned in a strong relief effort for the Cajuns closing out the fifth inning unscathed after inheriting runners on first and third with no outs, then held the Cajuns deficit at two runs (4-2) until a three-spot by UALR in the eighth inning provided the final margin.
The rubber match of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday. Cody Boutte gets the start on the mound for Louisiana.
Chase Compton continued to have the hot bat for the Cajuns, posting a three-hit day which upped his series hits total to five. Ryan Leonards singled in the fifth inning to extend his career-best hitting streak to 11 games.
Ryan Wilson was charged with the loss after being responsible for four of the Trojans' runs (three earned) and eight hits in four-plus innings of work.
With the loss the Ragin' Cajuns have to wait an extra day to have a chance at claiming their first road series win in Sun Belt Conference play.
Louisiana scored three at bats into the game. On the game's second at bat Leonards was hit by pitch then advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. On the next at bat, Seth Harrison singled through the right side to score Leonards for a 1-0 lead.
UALR got the run back in the bottom of the first on a Chris Burk RBI single then took a 2-1 lead in the second inning when Bryson Thionnet and Ben Crumpton posted back-to-back doubles with two outs.
An unassisted double play by Tyler Girouard with the bases loaded and not outs in the UALR half of the third inning nearly prevent the Trojans from scoring a third straight frame. David Guarno came through with a two-out single to right field to plate an unearned run that upped the UALR lead to 3-1.
Louisiana trimmed its deficit to one run on a Compton RBI single in the fourth inning, but the Trojans regained their two-run advantage after starting the bottom of the fifth with consecutive doubles.
The score remained the same through the end of the Cajuns' half of the eighth inning. Cockrell worked out of his runners on the corners on outs situation in the fifth inning and Moritz worked around a hit by pitch to start the Cajuns half of the eighth with a force out and second and double play.
Moritz gained breathing room in the bottom of the eighth as runs scored on a Guarno home run, Thionnet triple and throwing error on the relay throw into third base.
