LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team is slated to close out the road portion of the 2013 spring season with a three-match road swing in Texas facing UTSA, UT-Pan American and No.59 Texas A&M - Corpus Christi.
“This is our last road trip of the year before we come home for our final three home matches,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “We play three tough teams on the road closing out the trip against 59th ranked Corpus Christi. We just have to compete one match at a time and build momentum headed into conference.
“We have a lot of tough matches under our belt, so I feel the schedule has prepared us well. The guys are looking forward to our Texas trip. Let's see if we can compete and improve.”
Louisiana (10-9) opens the week on Monday at UTSA (9-8) with a 2:30 p.m. match in San Antonio, Texas. After the contest with the Roadrunners, the Cajuns head to Edinburg, Texas for a 3 p.m. match with UT-Pan American (6-12) on Wednesday. The Ragin' Cajuns close out the trip at Corpus Christi (10-7) on Friday at 3 p.m.
The Cajuns have won three of their last five contests including a 4-3 win over No.61 Samford. Louisiana is 5-8 away from Cajun Courts this year including a 3-3 mark in Texas.
Junior Rick de Groot paces the squad with an 11-6 mark in singles competition and an 11-4 record in doubles with teammate Jake Wynan. Freshman Hunter Johnson is second on the squad in singles wins with 10.
UTSA has also gone 3-2 in its last five contests picking up wins against UT-Arlington, Laredo CC and William & Mary. Diogo Casa leads the way for the Roadrunners with a 10-5 record in singles competition. Louisiana topped UTSA 4-1 earlier this spring at the HEB Tournament of Champions.
The Broncos face TCU and Oral Roberts before hosting the Cajuns. Thomas Panoulas has a team-best eight wins for UTPA.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi has won its last two matches and will face Oral Roberts before the match on Friday. The Cajuns will looked to avenge a 4-2 loss to the Islanders at the HEB tournament of Champions. Peter Nagy highlights the lineup for Corpus Christi as he is ranked 96th in the nation with a 10-2 record at the No.1 position.
