LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team opened up its three-match conference weekend with a 6-1 victory over Arkansas State Friday afternoon at Cajun Courts.

“A win like this is great and it gives us a lot of confidence as we get closer to the conference tournament,” freshman Nicole Breaux said. “We are all learning how to compete and get better as a team. It's always good to get a win at home.”

Louisiana (12-8) captured the doubles point on court three as Sandra Ahlqvist and Bailey VanDyke outlasted the team of Chiara Stefanov and Biljana Miloshevska, 9-8 (7-4).

The Cajuns also won at the No.1 position as Sophie van den Aarssen and Nicole Breaux cruised to an 8-2 victory over Ioana Teu and Janie Nowland.

“I felt like it was really important for us to take the doubles point,” freshman VanDyke said. “I started to feel some pressure once we had match point and then they had a couple match points, but we were able to hold on a get the point.”

In singles play, Ahlqvist increased the Cajuns advantage over Arkansas State (4-6) to 2-0 after she ran off yet another straight-set win over Teu at the No.4 position, 6-1, 6-2.

Senior Hannah Appleyard pulled Louisiana within a point from clinching on court six as she topped Sofia Krsmanovic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

At the No.5 position, VanDyke clinched the match as she bested Jess Heeps-Eriksen 7-6 (7-2), 6-3.

Louisiana picked up its final two points of the match on courts two and three. Breaux defeated Nowland, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 at No.2, while Burckhartt gutted out a 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) three set decision over Miloshevska at the No.2 position.

“We just need to stay focused because we have another tough match tomorrow,” Breaux added. “Hopefully our fans will show up in full force again and we can get another conference win.”

The Cajuns are back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. as they Troy at Cajun Courts. Admission to the match is free. There will also be live stats and video on RaginCajuns.com.
