Men’s Tennis To Host Youngstown State

LAFAYETTE, La. – Coming off of a 5-2 victory over Georgia Southern on the road, the Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team will open up a three-match homestand against Youngstown State on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Cajun Courts.

“We are looking at things like this is a new season and we are 1-0,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “Our new mantra is closing. If we can continue to get better with this, I really believe our team will improve for the stretch run.”

Louisiana (8-7) is undefeated at home this season holding a 3-0 record at Cajun Courts. The Cajuns have won three of their last five contests. This is the first home match for the Cajuns since defeating Alcorn State 7-0 and Xavier (La.) 6-1 on Feb. 19.

“We hope to extend our home streak to four matches,” Jeffrey added. “I know the guys will enjoy being at home in front of the Cajun fans.”

The Ragin' Cajuns have excelled in doubles play this season led by the duo of Rick de Groot and Jake Wynan. Overall, Louisiana is 24-10 in doubles boasting a .706 winning percentage. Wynan and de Groot have a team-best record of 9-3.

Freshman Hunter Johnson paces the team in singles competition with a 9-3 record, while de Groot is second in wins with eight.

Youngstown State (5-4) has a contest vs. Lamar on Tuesday before coming to Cajun Courts. The Penguins had a five-match win streak snapped in New Orleans, La. on Sunday dropping a 6-1 decision to Tulane. Sebastian Hagn leads the squad with a 6-3 record at No.2 singles.

“Youngstown State is an up and coming program,” Jeffrey mentioned. “They have improved over the past several years and are one of the elite teams in the Horizon League. Youngstown is pretty strong at the top of the lineup so look for some great matches at the one and two positions tomorrow.”
