LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team opens up a nine-match homestand with the University of Buffalo and Youngtown State in the midweek at Cajun Courts.
Louisiana (9-5) will face Buffalo at 2 p.m. on Tuesday before hosting Youngstown State on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
“Buffalo and Youngstown State are solid programs and will certainly test our ability to play at a high level,” head coach Greg Harkins said. “Buffalo is currently undefeated at 7-0 with a win over West Virginia of the Big 12. Youngstown State plays a tough schedule and coach Kysler is a motivator. His girls are experienced and will certainly be ready for the match.”
The Bulls (7-0) are undefeated on the year and have wins over West Virginia, 6-1, Pittsburgh, 4-3, and Temple, 6-1. Tanvi Shah leads the way for Buffalo with a 6-1 record at the No.1 position.
Youngstown State (7-5) will play at Southeastern La. on Tuesday before heading to Cajun Courts. The Penguins have lost three of their last five contests including a 4-3 heartbreaker to Idaho on Sunday. Sophomore Paula de Man paces the squad with a 10-1 record at No.1 singles.
“The matches coming up will challenge us both mentally and physically,” Harkins added. “We expect to earn every point this week through teamwork and playing the best we possibly can. It will be a learning experience.”
The Cajuns are riding a two-match win streak and have won eight of their last 10 contests. Recently, Louisiana post a hard fought 4-3 win over conference foe Middle Tennessee on the road in Hattiesburg, Miss.
The duo of Melissa Burckhartt and Juliette Clement in doubles has been exceptional this season holding a perfect 11-0 record in dual match play. Both Burckhartt and Sandra Ahlqvist lead the squad with eight wins in singles competition.
After the Ragin' Cajuns host Buffalo and Youngstown State, Louisiana will welcome conference foes ULM and North Texas to Cajun Courts. The UL-Monroe contest is slated for Friday at 2 p.m., while the Cajuns and Mean Green face off at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
“ULM and North Texas are two of the best teams in the Sun Belt,” Harkins mentioned. “ULM has been in and out of the rankings over the last year. They play disciplined and fight hard during matches. The Mean Green is the defending SBC Champions and they play one of the toughest schedules in the country. Coach Lama's squad has earned a top-notch ranking. It's a great preview week for our team. This will give us a good idea of where we are and where we want to be next month for SBC Conference Championships here at Cajun Courts.”
