ATLANTA, Ga. – After dropping a tough 4-3 decision a day ago, the Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team bounced back to defeat Georgia Southern 5-2 on Sunday morning at the Blackburn Tennis Center in Atlanta, Ga.
“The guys definitely attacked more today and did a better job of closing out matches,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “The message will be very clear moving forward.”
The Cajuns (8-7) swept doubles play to jump out to a 1-0 lead for the second straight day. Edgar Lopez and Jarred Wynan defeated Matthijs Verdam and Oliver Webb 8-2 at the No.2 position to clinch the point.
On court one, Rick de Groot and Jake Wynan picked up their team-leading ninth win topping the duo of Rayane Djouad and Marco Osorio 8-2.
“We started fast in doubles in today,” Jeffrey mentioned. “I felt all three teams played with good energy the entire time. That transitioned to singles by us winning five of the six first sets.”
In singles play, Damian Farinola extended the Louisiana edge to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No.6 singles.
Georgia Southern (5-4) picked up their first point of the match at the No.5 position as Marco Osorio defeated Jarred Wynan, 7-6, 6-2.
Junior Rick de Groot made the score 3-1 after notching a 6-4, 6-2 victory on court one over Andrew Dromsky, while Hunter Johnson clinched the win at the No.3 position defeating Albert Codina Sala 6-2, 6-3. With the win, Johnson improves to 9-3 on the season and just needs one victory to be the first UL player to reach double digit wins in the spring.
The Cajuns final point came on court four as Edgar Lopez pulled out a three set win against Oliver Webb, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7).
“This is a new season from here forward,” Jeffrey added. “We feel the guys have already gotten a season under their belt. The schedule that we played in the first season was a real test that stretched the guys. Now they have one season under their belts as we look to go undefeated in this new season ahead. We are 1-0 and look to go 2-0 on Wednesday.”
Louisiana returns to action on Wednesday at 3 p.m. when they host Youngstown State at Cajun Courts in the first of three straight home matches. Follow the men's tennis team on twitter @CajunMensTennis.
