Game Night Story Lines
>>> The Ragin' Cajuns conclude the inaugural regular season of the Garry Brodhead era on Saturday in a 2 p.m. contest against ULM at Fant-Ewing Coliseum in Monroe.
>>> The Warhawks claimed the season's first meeting on Feb. 10 at the Cajundome, rallying in the final three minutes to force overtime before taking a 68-63 decision in the extra session.
>>> With one more win, Garry Brodhead would become the first Cajuns coach to reach double digits wins in their inaugural campaign since Mike Doucet won 10 games in the 1988-89 season.
>>> Saturday's contest marks the 47th meeting all-time between the Ragin' Cajuns and Warhawks, overall, and the 14th in the Sun Belt era (2006-07 to present). ULM holds a commanding 40-6 series edge which includes an 18-1 mark in Monroe.
>>> The freshman class of Keke Veal (12.3), Sylvana Okde (10.2), Kia Wilridge (8.5), Jasmin Mills (4.4) and Adrienne Prejean (1.6) – the foundation class on which Garry Brodhead plans to rebuild the program – averages 37.0 points per game (65 percent of the team's offensive production).
>>> Sylvana Okde is on pace to finish the season with 70 three-point field goals made, which would rank fifth all-time in a single season and be the first Cajuns player with 70-plus triples since Rhonda McCullough in 1989-90 (McCullough made 88).
>>> Keke Veal registered a career-high 25 points Thursday at UALR, marking the second time in the past four games the true freshman has reached 20 points. Since Jan. 1, Veal is averaging a team-best 13.8 points per game.
>>> Louisiana has committed more turnovers than the opposition only seven times in 28 contests (UL ranks fourth in the SBC in turnover margin at +2.4).
LAST TIME OUT: UALR 48, Louisiana 41 (OT) in Little Rock, Ark.
Keke Veal scored a career-high 25 points but it was not enough as UALR rallied from a seven-point first half deficit to claim a 48-41 victory over Louisiana here Thursday evening in Jack Stephens Center.
Veal, the only Cajuns player to score in double figures, was 10-for-23 from the field with a pair of three-pointers. She had 15 points on six-for-10 shooting in the first half.
Only six Trojans scored, but five had eight or more. Shanity James led UALR with 11 points and 15 rebounds while Taylor Gault added 10.
After each team claimed 16 boards in the first half, UALR owned a 25-18 edge in the second half, including 12 offensive boards. After making 10 turnovers in the first half, the Trojans committed just five in the second stanza and had 12 second chance points.
The Cajuns did not trail the first 20 minutes as a patient offensive approach combined with 10 UALR turnovers gave Louisiana a 21-20 halftime lead.
The Trojans took their first lead of the night in the second half, 22-21, but the Cajuns answered right back, running off six straight points to build a 27-22 lead with 14:52 remaining.
UALR found it offense as Kiera Clark made all four baskets as part of an 8-0 Trojans run that put UALR ahead, 30-27, with 12:32 left.
The Cajuns hung close as a three-pointer by Veal made it a 34-32 game (8:47) before another 8-0 UALR run, keyed by a pair of treys by Janette Merriex pushed the Trojan lead to 42-32 with 5:29 remaining.
The Cajuns would have their opportunities as UALR would convert just two of its six free throws in the final 65 seconds, but cold-shooting would prevent a UL comeback.
SERIES HISTORY (UL-Monroe leads 40-6, overall; UL-Monroe leads 18-1 in Monroe)
>>> The Warhawks have controlled the series, which began during UL's first season of women's basketball in 1971-72. UL-Monroe has won 39 of the 45 all-time meetings.
>>> The two programs are in the same conference for the second time in their existence. The Cajuns and then-Indians were members of the Southland Conference from 1982-83 through 1986-87. UL-Monroe join the Sun Belt during the 2006-07 season.
>>> Saturday's game marks the 14th meeting as Sun Belt foes. UL-Monroe holds a 10-3 lead in the Sun Belt Conference era.
>>> The Cajuns' lone win in Monroe came in the first ever meeting between the two programs with Louisiana claiming a 43-32 decision on Feb. 4, 1972.
>>> Monroe ran off a 17-game win streak from 1981-82 through 1992-93 to turn the series record into today's heavy Warhawks' advantage.
NOTING UL-MONROE
>>> UL-Monroe snapped a four-game losing streak with a 64-53 win over FIU on Thursday. It was the largest Sun Belt win of the season.
>>> Ashleigh Simmons improved her All-SBC candidacy with her eighth double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. She is now tied for fourth with those eight performances.
>>> Coach Mona Martin collected her 250th all-time victory and collected a season-sweep of the Panthers.
>>> ULM is now 19-16 all-time in overtime games after the win at Louisiana.
>>> The Warhawk program collected its 600th all-time victory on Saturday at FIU. ULM is three home wins away from 300 inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
UP NEXT FOR LOUISIANA
>>> Following the UL-Monroe game, Louisiana will head to Hot Springs, Ark. for the Sun Belt Conference tournament.
>>> Depending on the Cajuns seed, UL could face either North Texas, South Alabama or Florida Atlantic at the SBC tournament.
