BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Ragin' Cajuns men's and women's track and field began competition in the Samford Multi and Invitational here Friday afternoon as Alex Harrell competed in the pentathlon and Sander Maes and Wes Gonzales took part in the heptathlon.
The meet, being held at the Birmingham CrossPlex, is the Cajuns second-to-last event before the Sun Belt Championships.
UL athletes were competing in the pentathlon and heptathlon for the first time this season.
Harrell, a freshman from Elmhurst, Ill., placed 10th with 2,896 points in her collegiate debut in the multis. She competed in a meet for the fourth straight weekend.
Harrell set her season-best time in the 800 meter run, clocking in at 2:40.77 to best her previous-best time of 2:45.86 at last week's Jeff Davis McNeese Invite. She finished tied for third in the high jump with a clearance of 1.59m/5-2 ½, which nearly matched her season-best 1.60m/5-3 set at Arkansas State (Jan. 25).
Through four events in the heptathlon, Wes Gonzales stands in sixth place out of 15 competitors – who registered point totals (17 total participants) – with 2,518 points. Gonzales will head into Saturday's events 488 points off the lead.
Due to an unsuccessful high jump attempt, Maes sits in 13th place after day one in the heptathlon with 2,239 points.
Competing in the 60 meter dash for the first time since the 2010 indoor campaign, Gonzales posted a personal-best time of 7.41 seconds to place 10th in the event. He landed Top 10 finishes in shot put (10.49m/34-5) and long jump (1.82m/5-11 ¾).
Until the mishap in the high jump, Maes was on championship pace. He placed fourth or higher in the 60 meter dash (7.24 – 4th), long jump (6.86m/22-6 ¼ - 3rd) and shot put (12.87m/42-2 ¾ - 1st). His shot put toss of 12.87m/42-2 ¾ landed him first place in the event.
Maes averaged 746.3 points per event through the first half of the heptathlon and with a strong finish on Saturday could climb into a Top 10 finish.
Events at the Birmingham Crossplex continue tomorrow, beginning with the 5,000 meters at 8 a.m. The heptathlon resumes at 9 a.m. with the 60 meter hurdles.
