LAFAYETTE – WKU shot 60 percent in the second half to maintain a double digit lead and defeat the Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team 77-58 here Saturday evening at the Cajundome in Louisiana's home finale.

The Lady Toppers (20-7, 13-5 SBC) grabbed their double digit lead nine minutes into the contest and with the Cajuns (9-18, 3-15 SBC) shooting 27 percent in the opening frame were able to maintain the double digit advantage.

Four Cajuns scored in double figures led by Keke Veal's 16 points. Senior Brandi Schambough connected on four 3-point field goals and finished with 13 points in her final outing in front of the home crowd.

Alexis Govan led WKU with a game-high 23 points while Chastity Gooch added 17 points and 12 rebounds for her 22nd double-double of the season.

The Lady Toppers led 35-23 at the break and stretched the lead to 25 points (54-29) six minutes into the second stanza. The closest the Cajuns came the rest of the way was 15 points.

Louisiana closes out the inaugural regular season under Garry Brodhead with a two-game road swing next week visiting UALR (Feb. 28) and ULM (March 2).

WKU forced a turnover on the game's opening possession, then scored on four of its first five possessions to claim a 9-2 lead by the 15:51 mark.

A basket by Veal at 13:58 trimmed the Cajuns deficit to 12-6, but the Lady Toppers scored 10 unanswered points to stretch their lead to 22-6 at 8:59.

UL battled back and cut the WKU advantage to nine points (29-20) after a Kia Wilridge layup 4:29 finished off a 5-0 run by the Cajuns.

A three-pointer by Govan return the lead to double figures, a 12-point edge which is the margin the Lady Toppers would carry into the locker room four minutes later.

After the teams combined to attempt eight free throw attempts in less than two minutes to open the second half, the Lady Toppers went on a big run, scoring 11 straight points to go up 49-27 at the first media timeout of the second half as they hit four of their first five shots.

Trailing 54-29, the Cajuns outscored WKU 16-6 to trim the deficit to 15 points (60-45) with 7:28 remaining. Schambough provided the bulk of the scoring burying three triples during the run and a Veal layup off a Robbie Brown steal lowered the deficit to 60-45.

A Gooch jumper and free throws on the subsequent possession brought the WKU lead to 64-45. From there WKU answered each Cajuns tally to maintain its comfortable lead.
