JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Coming off of a tough loss at Miami (Fla.), the 75th ranked Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team fell to 62nd ranked North Florida in yet another 4-3 decision on Monday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex in Jacksonville, Fla.
“We fought hard but came up short again with a 4-3 loss,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “We had a tough day in doubles and couldn't make it up in singles. We need to win these close matches. The team is so close to breaking through against these ranked teams.”
The Ospreys (2-4) went ahead 1-0 after winning the doubles point. The Cajuns (2-4) team of Rick de Groot and Jake Wynan suffered their first defeat in doubles competition falling in a tie break, 8-7 (7-3), on court one.
UNF jumped out to a 3-0 advantage after victories on courts one and four in singles play. 72nd ranked Moritz Buerchner defeated de Groot 6-1, 6-1 at No.1 singles, while Edgar Lopez dropped a 6-4, 6-0 decision to Norbert Nemcsek on court four.
Louisiana would mount a comeback tying things at 3-all. Hunter Goertz gave UL its first point of the day after topping Leonardo Nahar 6-3, 6-2 at the No.6 position.
Hunter Johnson pulled the Ragin' Cajuns within a point after coming from behind to defeat Pedro Davisson in three sets at No.5 singles, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. With the win, Johnson increases his singles record to 5-0 on the season.
Sophomore Jarred Wynan pulled things even with his 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win over Julien Belair on court three.
“Jarred really showed a lot of guts after a tough loss in Miami,” Jeffrey stated. “Hunter Johnson also fought hard to come back and win.”
North Florida's Daniel Sotomarino gave the Ospreys the win after defeating Jake Wynan in three sets on court two, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
The Cajuns close out the Florida road trip tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT when they face Central Florida in Orlando, Fla. For live updates of men's tennis follow the team on twitter @CajunMensTennis.
