Game Notes
Setting The Scene: Ragin' Cajuns finish up their season-long road trip in New Orleans, taking on the New Orleans Privateers at 5 p.m. at Lakefront Arena in New Orleans. The Cajuns are currently on a two-game losing streak, falling to Mississippi State and Louisiana Tech. Freshman Jaylyn Gordon led the Cajuns with 10.5 points a game over the last two games, providing a spark off the bench. Sophomore Adrienne Prejean has done her part on defense as of late, averaging 9.0 rebounds a game over the last three games.
About The Opponent: New Orleans is still seeking it's first win of the season, dropping seven straight to open the season. They are led offensively by Jewel Angelo with 7.4 points and 21.9 minutes a game. UNO has three mutual opponents with Louisiana in the young season, falling to Mississippi State (111-38), Louisiana Tech (69-39) and Jackson State (72-50).
Off The Bench: Freshman guard Jaylyn Gordon has played in all eight games this season, starting one, while averaging 8.6 points a game. In games she has come off the bench she averages 9.1 points, 2.9 assists, 2.7 turnovers and 1.4 steals in 23.7 minutes. She leads all non-starters in points, minutes, and steals per game, while leading the entire team with 3.0 assists a game.
Double (Figure) Trouble: Sophomore Keke Veal has scored in double-digits in all but three games this season, scoring a season-high 18 points against Jackson State, 17 against Sam Houston State, 15 against both Nebraska Omaha and SUNO, and 14 against Lamar. She is the only player on the team to average over 10 points a game. As a team, the Cajuns have had four players in double-figures in three games, doing so against Nebraska Omaha, SUNO and Sam Houston State.
To Their Defense: The Cajuns are second in the Sun Belt allowing 66.0 points per game. They trail UALR by 2.2 points (63.8). The Cajuns hold a -0.6 scoring margin, ranking fourth in the Sun Belt and just 3.0 points/game behind league-leader Arkansas State (+2.8).
From Downtown: Sophomore guard Sylvana Okde hit 74 3-pointers in her freshman season, marking the fourth-highest season in Ragin' Cajuns history. To put into perspective, she has already cracked the top-10 list for 3-point shots made in a career, ranking ninth in just her first season. She became the first player since Rhonda McCullough with 70-or-more 3-pointers in a season in 1989-90. McCullough also holds the all-time record for 3-pointers in a season, knocking down 102 triples in the 1987-88 season. As a sophomore, Okde has added to that total, hitting 15 of 53 shots from behind the arc for 88 career triples. She is four away from tying Alexis Green (2008-10) for eighth all-time in a career.
Defending The Three: Louisiana ranks 43rd in the nation in 3-point defense, with opponents shooting 25.7 against them. They rank first in the Sun Belt and among teams in Louisiana, holding opponents to 26-of-11 from behind the arc, while making 44 triples of their own.
Like She Stole Something: Keke Veal averaged 2.88 steals a game through the first eight games, leading both the team and conference. She also ranks 30th in the nation, and is third among teams on Louisiana's schedule in steals per game, behind Chrisstasia Walter of Louisiana Tech (3.57), and Raigyne Moncrief of LSU (3.13). D.J. Fowler of Charleston Southern leads the nation with 5.00 steals a game.
What's Next? The Ragin' Cajuns return home for two games, one before the holiday break and one after, starting with Alcorn State on Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. in the Earl. K. Long Gymnasium. They will take 10 days off from games, before returning to the floor on Dec. 29, to take on Southeastern Louisiana at 5 p.m. in the Cajundome.
