GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Ragin' Cajuns golf team headed to Greensboro, N.C. on Tuesday to begin preparations for the Greensboro Regional. The NCAA tournament appearance is the first for Louisiana in five years.
“This is a huge opportunity for us,” head coach Theo Sliman said. “We are going to approach this from a fun standpoint. We have worked hard all season long to get to this point. Now it's time to go out and enjoy this experience and just have fun with it.
“I expect that all five of our guys will have a tremendous effort. That's going to start with our fifth man. Despite all of our accomplishments, we have not had all five guys click together yet. I still think our best golf is ahead of us, and it would be perfect if we can put it all together this week.”
Seniors Philipp Fendt and Andrew Noto are no strangers to regional play as the pair has at least one regional appearance under their belt already. Fendt was selected to the previous two regionals, while Noto took part in the Ocala Regional a year ago.
The Cajuns will tee off from May 17-19 the Grandover Resort East Course in Greensboro, N.C. No.5 Auburn, No.9 UNLV, No.17 Florida, No.20 Duke, No.28 Indiana, No.32 Liberty, No.41 SMU, No.44 Texas Tech, Tulsa, Lamar, Charlotte, George Washington and Mount St. Mary's round out the field at the Greensboro Regional.
“Anytime you are playing at a regional you are pretty much facing the best in the country,” Sliman stated. “The field is going to be very challenging, but we are also in the field. We are a team that other teams are going to be looking at as well. We are fortunate to have seen a good portion of these teams throughout the year. Seeing some familiar faces should give our team a sense of calmness.
“It's hard to tell how this course is going to play having not set foot on it yet. However I think the course is very similar to one we played back in the fall. I think conditions with both the weather and the course are going to be preferable for us to play well. Really there is no such thing as a tough course if you can execute.”
UL is coming off of a third place finish at the Sun Belt Conference Golf Championship. Junior Brandt Garon led the Cajuns at the tournament finishing in third with a 54-hole score of two-over par (218).
Also teeing off for the Cajuns at the Greensboro Regional will be junior Yohann Vora and sophomore Chris Weninger.
“Bottom line is that we need to go out and prepare ourselves tomorrow in the practice round,” Sliman said. “We need to get some good work in and set ourselves up to do well in the regional.”
