LAFAYETTE, La. – The Ragin' Cajuns men's track and field team posted 48 points on Saturday to take the lead after day two of the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Ragin' Cajuns Track/Soccer Facility.
“I think we had a solid second day,” head coach Lon Badeaux said. “Things turned out about the way I had expected it to play out. I was kind of hoping the girls would have done a little bit more, but the guys are looking really good. I think we are going to be just fine when we wrap things up tomorrow, and I expect us to do very well on the men's side.”
Currently UL (48) holds a 12 point advantage over Arkansas State (36) on the men's side. Western Kentucky sits in third with 34 points, while South Alabama is in fourth with 32 points.
The Cajuns scored big early picking up 23 points in the men's long jump. Freshmen Delvin Davis and Joshua Sigler finished 1-2 as Davis posted a meet-best mark of 23-8 ¼ and Sigler followed with a jump of 23-6 ¾. Kenneth Bellard and Micah Thomas also scored for UL in the long jump.
“I was proud of the way the guys came out and competed,” Badeaux said. “These are the kind of things you need as a team if you want to do well at conference.”
Albert Fournette added to the Louisiana medalists in the shot put setting a new meet record with a throw of 61-4 ¼ to win the event. Myles Melancon also scored for the Cajuns in the shot put coming in fifth with a throw of 54-2.
“It was nice to see Albert come out and set a meet record, but this meet is about winning,” Badeaux said. ”The records are nice, but winning is the name of the game. Myles also had a good performance and gave us quality points in that event.”
In the decathlon, Wes Gonzales placed third with a score of 6,392 points to secure six of the Cajuns 11 points in the event. Freshman Sander Maes finished fourth in the event posting a score of 6,381 points. A miscue in the pole vault dropped Maes out of the lead and the freshman was not able to recover.
“It's tough in the decathlon because you have 10 events where you can screw up, and unfortunately for Sander it happened in the pole vault,” Badeaux stated. “We still were able to score 11 points. At the same time you look at Wes who had the meet of his life and really picked up the slack for us.”
Justin Jones positioned himself well for Sunday as he moved on to the finals of both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash. Jones ran a time of 10.52 in the 100-meters to finish fifth, while placing seventh in the 200-meters running a time of 21.46. Keyondrick Boykins advanced in the 110-meter hurdles running a time of 14.72.
“We got the guys through that we needed to move on to the finals in the sprints today,” Badeaux said. “I thought we might be able to sneak a couple more in, but I think we are going to be okay.”
On the women's side, South Alabama leads the way 52 points with Western Kentucky (48) in second and Arkansas State (45) in third. UL is currently in 10th with 12 points.
Jasmine Manual picked up eight of the 12 points in the long jump finishing second with a jump of 19-11 ½.
In the 800-meter dash, Petrona Layne and April Colomb each qualified for the finals as Layne posted a time of 2:14.13 to finish fourth and Colomb placed seventh with a time of 2:15.42.
Alexis Malone had a strong showing in the 100-meter dash as her personal-best time of 11.71 was good enough for second place and a spot in the finals.
Kacey Elphage also advanced to the finals of the 100-meter hurdles after running the fifth fastest time of the day, 13.94.
The final day of the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships is slated to get underway at 10 a.m. tomorrow with the field events. The running events are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
