LAFAYETTE, La. – Seniors Carlin Murray and Yanick Mandl helped guide the 64th ranked Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team to a 5-2 dual match win Saturday over Lamar on Senior Day at Cajun Courts.
“Certain players had a really good day today, while others did not play as well as they could have,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “That makes me a little concerned heading into the conference tournament. It was good to see Carlin Murray and Yanick Mandl really step up and played like seniors today.”
Rick DeGroot and Murray picked up a quick 8-3 win at No.1 doubles over Marton Horvath and Robert Lee. The Cajuns (13-6) clinched the doubles point at No.2 doubles. Carl Alberton and Mandl rallied to battle back from a 5-2 deficit to defeat Denis Ermilov and Carlos Valdenebro 9-7.
Jarred Wynan and Damian Farinola completed the doubles sweep for UL winning 9-7 at No.3.
Wynan carried the momentum over into singles play as he was the first to come off of the courts extending his win streak to nine matches after a strong 6-0, 6-4 victory at No.6.
At No.3 singles, Mandl followed up Wynan's win with a near flawless performance topping Horvath 6-0, 6-1 to give the Cajuns a 3-0 advantage in the match.
Murray clinched the match for Louisiana at No.2 with a gritty 6-2, 7-6 win over Ermilov.
Ted Nilsson notched the final point for the Cajuns as he extended his win streak to seven matches with a 7-6, 7-5 victory at No.4 singles.
“Right now our concern is that we are not playing at a high enough level,” Jeffrey said. “We aren't playing at a level that we can feel comfortable that we are going to win conference. We have the ability to do that though. We are in for a tough couple of weeks coming up.”
UL is back in action next Saturday when they head to New Orleans, La. for a 1 p.m. dual match with Tulane. The Cajuns then close out the regular season the following day at Southern Miss.
