Cajuns Come Up Short Against Denver

LAFAYETTE, La. – Despite getting a strong performance in doubles play, the Ragin' Cajuns women's team fell to Denver 5-2 in a dual match on Friday afternoon at Cajun Courts.

“We really got a good effort in doubles today,” head coach Greg Harkins said. “We had a lot of fight in a tough conference match, and despite the loss it was a good day. This was a good conference preview for us.”

UL (4-13) clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 win at No.1 by Milou Israel and Erin Wilbert. Sophie van den Aarssen and Sandra Ahlqvist defeated Caroline Schnell and Emma Isberg 8-2 at No.3 doubles.

“We had our best performance in doubles all year today,” Harkins noted. “That certainly gives us some encouragement as we head into the conference tournament.”

In singles play, Denver evened the contest with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No.1 by Sophia Bergner.

The Pioneers went on to take the next two points at No.3 and No.5 singles to take a 3-1 edge in the contest.

At No.4 singles, senior Tara Vasovic battled Emma Isberg, but came up on the wrong side of the ledger falling 7-5, 6-2 clinching the match for Denver.

Senior Erin Wilbert notched her eighth win of the year at No.2 singles topping Elena Najera 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

“We've been in tough matches all year long where it's a slim margin between winning and losing,” Harkins said. “We just need to hit the right shot at the right time. I thought Erin Wilbert really battled today in her win. We still have some more work to do, but we are getting better every time out.”

The Cajuns return to action on Monday at 12:30 p.m. when they face the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C.
