Women’s Tennis Falls to Lamar, 5-2

LAFAYETTE, La. – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Lamar in a dual match at Cajun Courts on Saturday afternoon.

“Today was another tough battle for our team,” head coach Greg Harkins said. “We've played a really competitive schedule this season and it's pushed the girls to give their max effort each time out. Playing this tough a schedule will benefit us come the conference tournament. We have to keep getting better everyday.”

“I give a lot of credit to Lamar. They are a well coached team. Coach Wong has a gritty team that is playing some great tennis late in the season.”

The Cardinals got out to a 1-0 lead after sweeping doubles competition. After wins at No.1 and No.4 singles, Alessandra Pennesi clinched the match for Lamar at No.5 singles.

Senior Erin Wilbert picked up her seventh win of the season defeating Alicia Porte 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 to move to 7-7 in the spring.

At No.3 singles, Sophie van den Aarssen recorded a three set win with a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Carolina Maso.

“Sophie and Erin fought hard and pulled out a couple good three set wins, but unfortunately we didn't get a total team effort,” Harkins said. “We have to get a total team effort if we want to win.”

The Cajuns return to action on Friday at 2 p.m. when they host Denver at Cajun Courts in the team's final home match of the season.
