Cajuns Top Southern Miss 4-3 To End Losing Skid

LAFAYETTE, La. - The Ragin' Cajuns women's tennis team ended a five-game losing skid on Saturday afternoon defeating Southern Miss 4-3 in a hard fought dual match at Cajun Courts.

“I was really proud of the effort today,” head coach Greg Harkins said. “This was another tough match for us. Every match at this level is a battle. We got the doubles and singles efforts we have been looking for, and that's what swung the match in our favor.”

The Cajuns (4-11) got out to a 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point. Milou Isreal and Erin Wilbert clinched the point with their 8-6 win at No.1.

Sandra Ahlqvist and Sophie van den Aarssen had a strong 8-0 victory at No.3 doubles.

After Southern Miss took a 2-1 edge with wins at No.2 and No.5, Hannah Appleyard evened the match at 2-all defeating Alex Bradley 6-0, 6-2 at No.6.

Israel pulled UL back in front 3-2 defeating Alexus Coats 6-3, 6-2 at No.1. With the win, the senior improved her team-best record to 10-5 and is now 8-2 in her last 10 matches.

Louisiana clinched the match at No.3 with van den Aarssen's sixth victory of the season, 7-5, 7-5.

“We had some players push through in the doubles and singles including Sophie's first collegiate clinch,” Harkins said. “The whole team contribution in both doubles and singles, and that is what pushed us through today. We are going to enjoy this win, but we will be right back to work on Monday working harder than ever.”

The Cajuns return to action on Saturday, March 31 when they host Lamar in a 2 p.m. dual match at Cajun Courts.
