LAFAYETTE, La. - The 47th ranked Ragin' Cajuns men's tennis team saw its four-match win streak come to end Friday as the Cajuns dropped a 5-2 decision to 75th ranked St. John's at Cajun Courts.

“Today was a gut check for our team,” head coach Mark Jeffrey said. “Bottom line is when the match came down to the clutch situations we went away and St. John's rose to the occasion. We have to handle stressful situations a lot better if we want to be able to compete for a championship.”

With the loss the Cajuns fall to 11-6 on the year and 7-2 at home. Louisiana's two home losses are both to ranked opponents.

“I give St. John's a lot if credit,” Jeffrey added. “They came in here and beat us on our home court. It was obvious they were the hungry team today. Our team has to develop and get better.”

The Red Storm took the doubles point after wins at No. 2 and No.3. Rick DeGroot and Carlin Murray picked up a doubles win at No.1 defeating Ilija Vucic and Milo Hauk 8-4.

Valentin Mihai and Mike Lampa just edged out Jarred Wynan and Damian Farinola 9-8 at No.3 to clinch the point for St. John's.

UL evened the match at 1-all with Ted Nilsson's fifth consecutive win as he defeated Kurt Anbarci in straight sets at No.5, 6-1, 6-0.

St. John's went on to take the next four points winning at No.1-4 singles. At No.1, 125th ranked Carlin Murray battled 40th ranked Vasko Mladenov to three sets but was unable to come away victorious falling 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

At No.6, Wynan increased his winning streak to seven matches holding on to defeat Lampa in three sets, 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.

“A couple of guys let different situations get the better of them today. Whether it was umpires or close calls, some of our guys were their own worst enemy today. We can't let this happen again.”

The Cajuns have two weeks off before heading to Shreveport, La. to face Centenary in a dual match at 1 p.m.
