OMAHA, Neb. – The Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team dropped a 79-67 decision to Omaha at Sapp Fieldhouse in Omaha, Neb on Friday night. The Mavericks opened the game on a 12-2 run and never looked back, handing Louisiana their first loss of the young season.
"I thought tonight's game was kind of a wake up call,” said head coach Garry Brodhead. “If we don't do what we're suppose to do on the defensive side and get to the spots and play our positions, then a lot of teams are going to be tough to guard. We got frustrated a little bit and that's the coach's responsibility to handle the frustrations, but we play a tough Nicholls State team on Monday so we have to learn from this game and move forward.”
The Mavericks opened the game on a 12-2 run and did not trail in the first half after shooting a sizzling 63.3% from the floor. The Cajuns were able to put a run of their own together midway through the first half and after a Kia Wilridge steal, Adrienne Prejean hit a jumper to make it a four point game, trailing 24-20.
Omaha's Paige Frauendorfer caught fire and scored 18 points in the first half as the Mavs' went on a 23-10 run, building their largest lead of 17 points and heading into the locker room holding a 47-30 lead.
Sylvana Okde converted four three-point baskets in the second half to close in on the Mavericks lead and despite the Ragin' Cajuns winning the second action of play, 37-32, the Mavericks converted when they needed to on key possessions and ran away with a 79-67 victory.
Okde led the Cajuns with 20 points, knocking down 4-7 from behind the arc. Fellow freshman Kia Wilridge contributed all around with 12 points, six assists, four rebounds and four steals. Louisiana forced the Mavericks to commit 20 turnovers, while turning the ball over 17 times.
Ashley Benjamin led the squad in rebounding and steals, grabbing four boards and five steals to go along with seven points. Adrienne Prejean and Keke Veal contributed nine and seven points, respectively. Brandi Schambough scored all six of her points in the first-half after knocking down a pair of three-pointers.
For the first time this season, the Ragin' Cajuns were outrebounded by the opposition 36-27. Louisiana made 7-of-10 free-throws, while the Mavs went 6-for-11 from the line. The Cajuns connected on 6-of-18 from behind the arc, while the Mavs hit 9-of-19 three-pointers.
Four Omaha players scored in double figures and were led by Frauendorfer's 18 points. The Mavericks improved to 2-0 on the season.
The Ragin' Cajuns are back in action on Monday night when the squad travels to Thibodaux, La. for a 6 p.m. game against Nicholls State.
